I want to hear some good/funny stories of people busting out MASSIVE PR's - like running times no one thought they were capable of - only to go back to running mediocre times after that.
I had a friend who was a 15:20/32:20ish guy who got entered in a 10K in a big invitational with a pretty aggressive seed time. To everyone's shock, he stuck with the pack and got dragged along to a 30:40 (no, he didn't miss a lap, we checked...). I think his PR after that was like 32 flat. Weird.
Billy Mills?
I ran a 35:15 10K PR on a legit course. Never faster than about 36:40 any other time. Only time I ran a 10K when I was in great (by my standards) shape.

I hate hearing stories like this. What was the guy doing in all his other races? Standing around picking his nose?

I ran exactly one 3000m in my life and it was indoors. I ran 8:26 and the whole time I knew I was flying but managed to tag along with some guys I had no business running with. My 5K PR was 15:42, meaning I was about 30 seconds faster than I 'should' have run.
Can't recall names but the guy from Brazil that set WR in marathon or Kenyan who beat Tergat at 2001 Chicago when he was a pacer.
How about the three other Chinese women who broke the 3000m world record in the race in Beijing in 1993.
The world record was 8:22.62 before the meet.
Wang set the new record in 8:06 with Qu second in 8:12.
But they were both also world champions so not exactly one-race wonders.
Linli Zhang was 3rd in 8:16.50 - She had run 8:46 the year before and nothing since
Liyan Ma ran 8:19.78 in the semis and 8:21 in the final (so that's two races) - no results on IAAF for any year before or after.
Lirong Zhang 5th in that final in 8:21.84 - came in with an 8:48 PR, no results after that year
So that's 3 women coming into a meet with relatively slow PR's.
They all break the previous world record and never show up in a result again.
Duncan Kibet and James Kwambai. Haven't done anything spectecular sind their low 2:04.

Not a one race wonder. Mile PR and 1500 PR are both very fast. Most impressive race i've seen from this guy is watch him jog...yes i mean JOG a 3:59 1600 leg in the dmr at penn.
a local kid near me had PRs of 9:44 and 4:30 going into his xc season,, trained like a monster of summer and pr'd in the first race of the year in like 15:40, then he goes to a HUGE invite and runs sub 15 and solitifies himself as one of the top in the region of the US. his season best for the rest of the year was 15:40, came in 3rd at state.

He basically lapped himself! Happens. Bob Beamon did that but was long jump.

HS teammate was running 203-5 or something. Busted out a sub 2 and finished third or something in our league champ. meet. People were really head scratching. Then he ran a 50.x leg in the relay, doubt he had ever been under 52.5.
May not have the times exactly right, but in his last HS meet he turned it up big time.
