Richard Kiplagat.
Richard Kiplagat.
you got that right
Richard Kiplagat, ahhhh wrong. Molly Huddle is NCAA Freshman of the year.
How old is Kiplagat.
I don't think he's too old. He ran one year in Canada, but still technically (I believe) has three years of American NCAA eligibility left. I would guess he's about 20. He's definitely not 24, like some of the Kenyan ffreshmen out there.

Kangogo is the one who ran at a Canadian school. Kiplagat was previously at the same school in Kenya, Tambach Teacher's College, that Cheboiywo was at before going to EMU. This site has a listing for a 28-year-old Richard Kiplagat, but there may be more than one

Oh, yeah, sorry, I got Kiplagat and Kangogo mixed up. Kiplagat is definitely not 28, though. I heard something about Iona sending a coach down to Kenya over the summer and that Kiplagat was the guy he found, but I don't really know too much about the whole thing, and I definitely don't know any of their coaches. Does anyone on the boards have better info?

if you're really curious about the age of kenyans, ask what high school they went to, and when they finished. their colleges should be able (required?) to provide this information. figure about 19-22 for finishing age of a male high school senior in kenya anywhere from 16-22 for a girl. there are exceptions each way. i'm a big advocate of kenyans getting their educations through athletic scholarships, but i'm also for their doing it fairly and honestly.
same process should tell you cheboiywo's real age, and when was he at tambach? figure 22+ to enroll in school there.

I second that if were counting forign athletes.
I know he's was like 1:48 in the 800 last year. love to see what he'll do in track.
Richard Kiplagat is the best frosh. by far. Also, he is not 28 as people say. More like 21.
Can someone clarify something that I've been wondering for awhile?
As long as someone has not previously enrolled in college, can't they be as old as they want? For example, FSU quarterback Chris Weinke was 28 a few years ago.
Rules for football are different than cc/track. There is an age limit of 25 in running, while there is none in football. Thus, Weinke competing at age 28.
just curious, what times has kiplagat done?
I will go with Lockhart as a "true" freshman and congratulations to him for an outstanding season and a great NCAA meet. Kiplagat was listed as a soph in one article earlier this year (might be a mistake) and also was listed as coming from a Teachers College in Kenya. I will go with Lockhart!!!!!!!!!! 19 real years old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
