I've been running now for 3 years. Have not broken 5:28 for the mile still. I ran throughout the summer(this one), every day at least 4miles and the highest was 7miles. I did strength training in the am and ran at night.
My coach for track who did ridiculous workouts before, is now my XC Coach. He has been following some illinois 30time state champ workout schedule they do and its insane.
I have done 20 400's at 1:10-1:16 pace, with 2mins of rest
15 400's all at 68-75 with 1min rest in b/t each one, and every 5th one we get a quick 2min water break.
1-1-2-2-3-3-4-4-5-5-6-6-5-5-4-4-3-3-2-2-1-1 (1st number you run hard, second you run slow, i was running these consecutively without stopping and the 1min was around 1:10 and then the 5min and 6min quick ones were about 5:40 pace..)
1mile repeats x 3 with 3mins in b/t got a time of 5:40, 6:00, 6:10 (this is the day after 10mile run and a lot of other hard/exhausting stuff) with a time trial 5k 2 days later, and race day 4 days later..
30 200's...
5 800s, 5 400's 1min in b/t
Each day is like this, ridiculous workouts with these fast times. Before our meet we do a time trial 5k 2-3 days beforehand to see whos on varsity. Our times have barley improved in 2months, i am at 21minutes right now which is ridiculous i have been stuck here for 3 years now after running distance for so long, i was 19:19 my sophomore year..and never broke that again. (i know my soph me would never be able to do these workouts too!) We also hit the weight room almost every day after our workouts or ab stuff, lifting weights, or ridi aerobic workouts.
My shoes I bought 2-3 months ago from /r/AdvancedRunning[5] have even bigger holes then my previous shoes on the toe box, and now on the right side of the shoe where the pinky toe is.
I can do these workouts, but can't even break 5:30 for the mile, or break 21minutes for a 5k. We randomly do a long run every 1-2 weeks and now it consists of a hellish 10mile long run we have to do....
I have been trying to do everything I can to be the best runner I can be, eating right, sleeping more, stretching often and none of this seems to be helping me at all. I trust my coach fully, and I don't want to question his methods but i there is something odd when for 4 years (a friend of mine) doing track/xc cannot break 5:39 in the mile still after 4 years.
What the hell is wrong, what can i do to improve? I want the school record for the 800 but it just seems I completely suck or something. I even got my first DNF yesterday . . . . people were passing me left and right and mentally I lost. My legs felt dead/no energy at all.
I'll be replying to all posts here with questions or i'll give my email out to have in-depth talk if anyone is willing to.
PR over the course of 3 years:
400 - 57 (2012 track season)
800 - 2:13 (2012 track)
1600 - 5:28 (2012 track but never came close again and right now XC its been 5:40)
3200 - 12:02 (2012 track, ran a faster 2mile during a xc race a year ago... no where close recently during xc)
5k - 19:19 (sophomore 2years ago before track worked my butt off running/biking by myself, closest was last year XC with 20:02 and this year has been 21minutes..)
