Those of us who have actually run a sub 3hr marathon know how difficult a feat this is with respect to training and executing to the plan, particularly if you are a masters runner. I was completely offended by Paul Ryan’s comments to claim a “2 50 something” when in reality he was off by 1hr.
Paul Ryan, the politician, epitomizes what’s wrong with this country. Instead of being straight forward and HONEST, he exaggerated his own capabilities. How in the world can you trust any of his campaign promises? I am an independent voter and was equally offended in 2004 when John Kerry claimed to have run the Boston Marathon. I was equally critical of Kerry’s behaviors as I searched the history of Boston Marathon finishers. Those of us who have earned our battle scars on the road expect a bit of sincerity from the celebrities and politicians who want to be a part of the same marathon finishers club. Like anything else, you have to earn your stripes and it should be easily referenced.
Bill Walker was right in stating that “…A Vice-Presidential nominee telling a verifiable lie about himself should attract a lot of attention. It speaks to his character, and that's relevant to the issue of whether someone should vote for Romney/Ryan in November.” Those of us who have suffered many times at mile 25 / 26 know the true character of a marathoner as one’s heart and soul are on display for everyone to see. I saw no heart by Paul Ryan who wanted to boast about his low body fat percentage using the PX90 system. At least in my case, I know it really took 80 mile weeks to achieve those body fat readings……….
