Frank Shorter was self coached...Cosmas N'Deti, Geoffry Mutai...the list goes on and on. Who knows, Ryan may not have even made the team if had stayed with Mammoth/Mahon. Coaching is way over-rated! Ryan Hall is no Frank Shorter. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Coaching is not overrated. I'll take Salazar, Shumacher, Hanson, Canova, Mahon, McMillan, et al over Hall/God coaching any day of the week. Yes, that includes Sunday's as well. Some of us find it necessary to run and work on Sundays. I love Bill Squires. He'd be a great consultant. No way he's up to being a full time coach today.

Frank Shorter was a sensible, rational person. Religious fanatics are not sensible and Hall will continue making bizarre decisions in regard to his training and racing.
I'm not bashing people who are religious, but it's clear to see that Hall is past the point of being religious and at the point were his beliefs are a mental illness.

Believing in Christ's sacrifice for the salvation of humankind does not mean we think we're not reponsible for our own actions.And yes, I'm a Christian.And yes, I would love for Ryan Hall to get a human coach to help to develop his God-given talent.

Ryan Hall's injuries and struggles do not validate your fanatical self righteous attitudes.
His failure to meet lofty expectations have no bearing on the validity of God or religion in general.
People have not been believing in God for as long as other people have beem. You are not anymore advanced.
Your not a very critical reader if you take that NYT article in June and other posters trolling to present the fair view of Hall's personal faith and its intersection with running.
I'd love to see you run 2:04:58 at Boston, call it a easy downhill course, and thank science. Please take all the dope you can to do so.
Hall should have had loftier expectations than quitting the Olympic Marathon after 10 miles. We had higher expectations than he did, i.e. finish the race at all costs!

Frank Shorter's coach wasn't an airhead
Mike Morton just ran 172.45 miles in 24 hours to win the 24 Hour World Championships in Poland. The old American record was 165.7 miles by Scott Jurek, when he took a silver at the same event 2 years ago. Morton not only won the race, but he demolished the field, beating the second place competitor by 9.83 miles.
Previously in the year, Mike won the Long Haul 100 with a course record of 13:18:58, the Umstead 100 with a course record of 13:11:40, the Keys 100 with a course record of 13:42:52 (all of these on trail with significant gain/drop) and the Badwater 135 (135 miles from death valley to mt whitney, almost all uphill, on roads, in extreme temperatures, high of 118 F at the hottest spot on the course this year) with a time of 22:52:55, 86 seconds off the course record.
5 races in one year, all 100 miles or longer, netted him 5 victories, 4 course records, an individual gold in a world championship event, and an American record by a huge margin.
This guy is truly a machine.

Oregon Project might be more realistic than previous. Their (Sara and he) ASICS contracts are up at years end. A change of scenery and direction could bring him around again.
While he did run 204, yes it was Boston, Ryan is best off going back to 10k-15k-13.1 road stuff until 2013 and running something like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg or even Paris, all which have 204-205 guys. A 204 on one of these fast courses, (non aided like Boston) and a win will impact his career more than another 2nd-3rd placing at Boston or NYC.
I don't think the IOC is handing out appearance fees...
Hall, Davila, etc showed up and ran (even with questions about health/fitness) BECAUSE IT'S THE OLYMPICS!

I know who Jack Bachelor is. Are you saying he coached Shorter. He trained with him, yes. What makes you think he coached him?
I've never heard of Frank Shorter ever having a coach other than Bob Giegengack at Yale.
