If you are "teetering" (as you wrote) because of the alcohol and pot, I suggest you stop taking them.

no and no
When I need to hydrate myself, I just stick with water...

You've run a 3:44 1500m and you're teetering on the edge of elite?
That must be some good shit you're smoking, brah.

#boss
that's such bs. What's your name?
I used to smoke every day (weed), and often at least 3-4 sessions. I would also go out one or two nights a week and drink pretty heavily depending on my racing schedule. It wasn't particularly healthy, but it's good for you. Keeps you sane. But it's all about keeping it under control. If your partying habits ever become a problem, you have to let it go a bit. Also stay away from the hard liquors to prevent nasty hangovers and it's all good, really.
I'm by no means elite. 4:22 mile, 15:03 5k, 25:19 8k
Personally, I don't like drinking that much. I feel as if it effects my running more so than the smoking does. I have never smoked the cancer sticks.
I love weed. Obviously burning inhaling plant matter isn't good for you, but I felt as if it had no real impact on my running performances. It's also not carcinogenic. My senior year in track I smoked weed everyday, and ran 20-40mpw (red shirt/anemic) and ran my PR in the 800 (2:00) and ran a handful of 4:06-4:10 1500m races (PR 4:04)....I ran 4:06, 2 seconds of my PB about 3-4 hours after toking it up. While running joke mileage cuz I couldn't recover and I really didn't care.
I have a vaporizer right now, and am very happy with it. I try not to smoke weed, but rather eat it or vape it all the time.
I also know of PLENTY of runners faster than I... who have no problem with weed and their performances. 28:xx 10k guy, 14:20/24:10 5k/8k guy, 3:51 1500m runner, all pot heads or used to be.
Just keep doing your thing man, if you become elite while still able to have a life how much better would that be. I could probably run closer to low 3:40's but having funa and getting to still run sub 3:50's is my personal prefrence. I would burn out and run slow if I didn't enjoy some cold beers.
Old and slow, but run 6 days out of 7 on average. I don't smoke (although I did for a few years when I was young). I have a couple of glasses of wine most evenings (although not every day). Each year I lay off the booze for all of January.
I drink up to 30 drinks a weekend. I don't go out during the week, work a 9-5 and bounce Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. I pregame with about 6-10 beers and then head out. I smoke when its free and my friends are offering.Ran a 16:12 5k recently. But, I don't really get too hungover and don't mind going for a 10 mile run early the next morning. The most important thing though were missing is I probably get laid more than any of you geeks and was popular in high school and college.
I won't even begin to claim that I'm elite or anything. I'm a highschool runner who just enjoys the sport. I am competitive enough on the highschool scene, certainly not bad for my age. I have never tried any alcoholic beverage, but I smoke fairly often. I tried cigs for a very short time, and I regret that quite a bit. I just smoke weed now, but I even quit that just for my senior year of XC. I wouldn't want to get drug tested and kicked off the team (but it hasn't had any effect on my running ability thus far). I'm sure the smoke has a negative effect on lungs, but from my research the cilia begin to grow back almost as soon as you quit (meaning that in the past 5 weeks that I haven't smoked, my lungs are back to normal). Like somebody above said, there are no carcinogens, so I see nothing wrong with a joint every now and then.
Junior year I smoked throughout all of cross and track, and still set personal bests in everything I ran, but I'll admit, I fell far short of my goals. So if you can handle smoking and drinking often, then go ahead and do it. No need to get all technical and whatnot. I doubt Paavo Nurmi had his training down to a science. I doubt even Pre had as much physiological knowledge as a lot of teens have today. Maybe it makes you a little worse, but will you really regret a difference of .8 seconds in your 1500m PR? Or maybe 5 seconds in your 5000m PR? I'd say it's worth the enjoyment.
Smoking actually has some benefits for runners as it works out the lungs. And most (though not all) of the negatives from the tar are worked out of your system during distance workouts the next morning.
Drinking in moderation is harmless, but drinking in excess leads to hangovers which leads to missed or sub-par workouts, so control the drinking.
Just a marathoner that ran 2:42 at Boston a hundred years ago...beer, good beer, is my favorite recovery drink. Also helps me relax night before race. 6 pack 3-4 times a week. smoke a few cigs. used to fog it daily no longer though.
I never got into smoking. That was a decision made long before I was a runner.
I only drink occasionally. I can go long periods without any, and when I do, I probably stop when I'm only halfway to being a mess. Mainly I like champagne anyway. Good port if I could afford it. Some of the harder stuff, especially Scotch, I could never drink. It's like gasoline to me.
Work full time and run twice a day almost every day. Don't drink during the week. Drink very heavily on the weekends. It definitely hurts my training. On the weekends I get terrible sleep and feel like shit most of the time and my mileage suffers a lot. During the week, however, I don't drink and go to bed early to get plenty of sleep. It's not an ideal lifestyle but it works pretty well. Each week I get 5-6 days of healthy living and hard training and 1-2 days of having fun.
I am a sub 14:30 guy and go through periods of smoking every day and also periods where I only smoke (usually vape) a couple times a month. I have not really noticed a difference in performance between those different lifestyles. Drink maybe once a week. I feel guilty about smoking a lot sometimes but looking back on my logs for the last couple years I continue to improve regardless of whether I'm smoking or not.
Also I never smoke, but not for health reasons. I just always found weed to be thoroughly unenjoyable. Cigarettes just seem stupid.
Solid thread. Bump.

Actually I'm definitely exagerrating a bit there. In college it was probably that number. Now I probably drink 10 maybe once a week and then anywhere from 3-6 the other few nights a week I drink[/quote]
I know this will sound dumb, and since I've never drank alcohol I can never understand...but how can you be so thirsty to have 10 drinks of anything? Why not hydrate with water or a sports drink?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
