Lopez Lomong's little brothers open up HS XC season

Upon viewing my post, I can see that someone might think my tone is sarcastic. It's not. I absolutely believe these kids will be the low-15s for 5K in their senior years.

try low 14s. Interesting that they go to Fork Union. Thats also where Kip Keino's son went.

it's a 3 mile not a 5k.

Since when does a 17+ 5k as a freshman point to a low 14 minute senior? Ritz and German are the only sub 14:30s that I can even recall!

It's going to take them 40+ seconds to run 160 more meters?

the fastest of the two is running 16:55 pace. I doubt he could keep that finishing sprint up for another 160 meters.

Tell that to Chris Derrick. Don't think he broke 17 minutes for 3 miles his freshman year.

Ok, but I think that's a little exaggerating to say "17+". It's only 160 more meters. That means reducing your last 100m sprint by 1 or 2 seconds. So they'd both be under 17.

I think your order of words is backwards. Miraculous is much more extreme than ridiculous. But, I wouldn't call that ridiculous. I'd call it great or very good. Rupp did much slower and faster than that, didn't he?

These times covert to 16:57 and 16:59 respectively for the 5k racing distance event.

Running under 17 as a freshman (1st weekend of Sept!) shows crazy talent, nothing more or less than that. No one can predict how fast he'll run in 4 years, but we can all see and agree that the potential to do something special is there.

Are the more milers or 5K types?

I ran 17:38 as a frosh and 14:39 as a senior. No one in my family has ever been a runner. Considering these kids are Lopez Lomong's bros, I wouldn't downplay their upside just yet.

Dropping 45-60 seconds per year is pretty normal. Besides, it's the first meet of the season, so their times are probably much slower than what they'll be running in November.

If they have the dedication of their older brother, they will drop time rapidly and be running in the 15s this year and then probably national contenders in two and three years, respectively.

Check your stuff, NB Results from this summer. and 4 of the top 6 were juniors.
