What was the record before? Like 12.82 or .83?

12.87.
12.80/12.87 = .9945 of the old WR
Breaking the 5k world record by that same percent would mean 12:33.23
Breaking the 10k world record by that same percent would be 26:08.94
He OBLITERATED the world record today
So then he just dropped around .1 from PB? That's dirty.
What do you think he could run for a flat 100?
Usually, hurdlers at this level will vary by .2 or even .3 during the season, but Merritt was extremely consistent in the low 12.9's, so this was just the final breakthrough on his new approach. Prior to this year, he had run low 13, SIX years ago, so this breakthrough year was a long time coming. I really thought that it would be David Oliver who broke the world record this year after nearly getting it several times last year. This breakthrough in the hurdles is akin to what Skeets did thirty years back. I hope he's clean but he certainly has been knocking at the door all year long. Incredible. After dropping .06 in all the years since Renaldo Nehemiah, the record just was smashed by .07 in one race!
I was waiting for such a time for 10-15 years. Finally the level of the 110m hurdles record is closer to all the other mens records. I always thought this record is weak. Still a good way to reach the 100m, 200m, 1500m, 5000m...
But for sure a wonderful performance.
I don't follow hurdling very close, and I don't know his seasonal record very good, but he's a very strong candidate for athlete of the year I think? Who else? Bolt? Rudisha?
Where did the World Record go then? I thought Merritt had it now, why did it leave?
Robles had it , there are other countries on this planet you thick yank cock-sucker !
It fley into the public, mabye it's still there. We can go looking for it.

Now you can appreciate how impressive it was thirty years ago when Dave Moorcroft broke Rono's 5000m record by almost six seconds!

And I can REALLY appreciate how impressive it was when Geb took down Moses Kiptanuis record by just about 11 seconds in 1995
Someone on TFN message board posted a link:
You wouldn't gain 30 cm by switching to flop.

To do so would be like accusing a high jumper of drugs because he improved his beat by 30cm after switching from the Western Roll to the Fosbury Flop and not taking the significance of that change in technique into account.

Fosbury improved from 1.83m to 2.24m in three years by moving to the flop.
A masterful race indeed. I get the impression that he's a true student of the sport... Merritt ran faster than what Renaldo Nehemiah thought was the real WR(12.82, which was later disallowed because of "faulty timing")
I'm a hurdler and used a 7 step run up to the first hurdle. I'm 6-4 with very long legs so this wasn't too much of a challenge for me...the challenge came by fitting in my steps in between the hurdles. Anyway, one less step in my run up ALWAYS made me the first to the first hurdle, and this will not only put pressure on the other hurdlers to catch you, it aids in race-confidence. I saw Merritt's video. It was a perfect race. He was snapping down his trail leg like crazy. He was always a good hurdler but cutting the one step off his run up was just what he needed. It's a huge breakthrough in technique if you can handle it.

rono shouda gone well below 13 if he'd had a rested/even-paced race in '78
7'28/7'29 , 12'55/12'56 , 27'10 are reasonable estimates for his potential in '78
( don't think there were any real wabbits for him either as in moorcroft's run )
those are just also just kenyan times in this era, so nothing remarkable
he was good for those nearly 35y ago...
Go Merritt! One of the greatest track performances of all time!!! He's the man!! He crushed a very hard record! Athlete of the year !

Fosbury invented the flop in high school long before he could become a competent straddler.
Merritt was pretty good at 8 steps.

Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
