The German armies involved in the advance to Moscow were the 2nd Army, the 4th Army, the 9th Army, the 2nd Pz Army and 3rd and 4th Panzer Groups.

As one of the researchers sifting documents about the Stalingrad campaign in the British War Museum for an author who went on to write a best seller, I can assure that the Russian winter only became a factor when the battle had been effectively lost. If one were to pick out the major contributions to the defeat, number one would be Hitler’s constant inept meddling and interference in the various operations up to and during the battle and number two, probably the appointment of General Paulus in command of the 6th Army, a general who had never even commanded a division or a corps previously. Number three would be the incredible heroism and fighting spirit of the defending Soviet troops and the appointment of Chuikov to lead them and four might be Goering who falsely claimed that the Luftwaffe could supply the 6th Army from the air after they had been surrounded.
