Actually, not always so. I was a rugby player in college in the late seventies, early eighties and on my second marathon ran 3:03+. I've tried to retrieve the results a couple times to prove to a friend I was faster but I had no luck.

I had no idea how to train, thinking that starting 6-8 weeks before the race was a long time.

I ran four marathons in two years, the last in 1985 and did not run one again until 17 years later and ended up running in the mid-two fifties at age 47.

That 3:03 by the way, was hundreds of places from the front in a field of probably only about 1000 in 1983.

That same time in that same race would today land you in the top forty.

Sounds like he exaggerated his time. Almost as bad as Kerry's having claimed he ran Boston then refusing to correct his "mistake" or provide more details afterwards.

Ha. I knew it was BS. If Paul Ryan mans up, admits he made a mistake and apologizes to all the runners out there who have worked so hard to hit a sub 3 marathon, I will have respect for him. I can certainly understand how a casual participant in the sport would have trouble remembering a marathon time from twenty plus years ago. However, if he does not come clean and admit that he was wrong, then he is a dirtbag politician. He knew that his alleged fitness was in the media and was being touted as a virtue. If he does not fess up, it will be clear that he was trying to puff up his image with lies. All he had to do was say "it has been so long I do not remember my time."

Ummm... what are you trying to say? Lying about a birth certificate ( which i believe he did) versus a little fib or someone who can't EXACTLY remember a hobby jogging time that he ran? I'm certainly guilty of not remembering certain times/event but I definitely know where I was born or would not lie about it.

Paul's older brother is, in fact, Stanley H. Ryan, a longtime resident of Minneapolis, who was 28 years old back in 1990 -- exactly as the results state. I would guess that the race entries for Stan and Paul used Stan's mailing address, which would explain why Paul's city shows up as Minneapolis in the results.

Completely agree. I'm looking at printed results of 1970 Mission Bay (San Diego) Marathon (which I still have because I won it in 2:22, couldn't resist the shameless plug, sorry!) Anyway, among 53 who ran 3:03 or faster were no fewer than 26 teenagers, mostly guys coming off X-C (race was in January) who did a long run or two and just jumped into the marathon. Included two 14 year olds (2:55, 2:56), three 15, five 16 (incl. Mike Baer, 2:37:12 for 9th, one place ahead of Doug Schmenk who later was U.S. champion and ran 2:14). Really, if you're young and in any kind of shape 2:5x is nothing. Completely plausible that Ryan could have done it without being running-obsessed, then gotten hazy on the details. IMO most of the posters here are pussies.

The point is not whether someone could have run it. The point is that Paul Ryan didn't run and said that he did.
