Not on Athlinks so it never happened.
If he did break 3 I am sure the course was short.

What the hell are they implying with this line:
"...The debate has quickly taken off on running forums (yeah, they're a thing),..."

Ok, I'll bite, what what the greatest of his lies, or just one of the greater lies?
I emailed the Marine Corps marathon folks, and they were kind enough to check, but unfortunately found no record.
So cross that one off the list.

And you know this how? Ryan may indeed be telling a tall tale, but the absence of online results does nothing to convince me of that. My sub-3 performances at Lakefront in the 90s happened, the course was USATF certified, and neither Athlinks or MarathonGuide have access to finish times from those years.
Man you guys are losers. I don't know much about this Ryan guys aside from that he is Romney's running mate, and I oculd care less about politics etc., but I ran one half marathons 6 or 7 years ago, right after college when I was at my peak of running obsession, and I can't remember the exact time. I know it was 1:13is and maybe even 1:12 something. Additionally, I don't remember my exact 1500, 5k, or 10k PR's. I remember ballpark, but not exact.
I haven't run competitively in years due to injury, and now I just race mountain bikes and do other stuff. If I can forget leading a boring life, I'm guessing a guy who is big time enough to get a VP nod has had enough interesting things happen to him that he might not remember.
It's hilarious to see some of you scouring for results and over analyzing this whole deal though!

Hey, we're a thing! Thanks! I guess.
Now maybe some non-runners will discover us and learn who is faster in the 100m, Steve Buscemi or Rick Moranis.

Same here, I ran a HM right after HS at my peak (sub 16 5k) and I think it was low 1:12 but I don't remember exactly. I have proof of 1:13 that I ran a few years later.
However, I remember my Marathon PR on the second. And I remember both chip and gun times (5 sec apart).
No one ever asks about your HM time - they always ask about the M PR.
This from the (Janesville) GazetteXtra.com, 14 April 2011.
"On Patriot’s Day this Monday, Janesville native Tobin Ryan, 46, makes his debut in the storied Boston Marathon, a 26-mile, 385-yard run from Hopkinton to Copley Square.
The historic run attracts nearly 30,000 participants. Ryan is happy to be one.
“I’ll be one of 28,000 people (running),’’ said Ryan, whose younger brother is Wisconsin First District Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). “I’m really excited. I should be nervous, but I’m not.’’"
Claims 3:57 over "hilly terrain".
I have seen 16 year old kids who have never run over 13 miles run
2:53 at the end of XC season. 2:50 + is certainly not worth lying about
but the real funny thing is not one person will change their vote
when it's proven he ran 2:5x
I get the arguement that maybe this wasn't a huge deal for him, but I think he is the kind of guy who would remember his time. He is too intense and driven to just forget something like that. Especially because a 2:5x is really good for a non serious runner the one time he does a marathon.
Anyway, I thinks few people have done some good detective work here. I think there is a good chance it was the marine corp marathon some time between 92-2000. Did a local paper publish all the results back then? Someone needs to go check a library.

See eight posts above yours.
Except the Marine Corp Marathon director has no record of him every running the race in their archives.

I ran 2:43:10 in 1983; 2:46:30 in 1984 and 2:42:58 in 1988. I'll bet you can't find those on any internet source.

If he has been out of running for a while, the times and paces wouldn't really connect anymore. I haven't raced in a while due to injury. Even though I ran decent (under 18) 5ks for a female, I couldn't tell you off the top of my head what pace/mile I hit in a race. I ran one half marathon in high school, and I have no idea at all what the time was. My point is, if he stopped caring about running after the marathon, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to forget the exact time.
My first thought was "BS - I know to the second my marathon PR!" but actually, I've had two running lives. The first I wasn't such a serious runner more of a hobbyjogger that ran a marathon once or twice a year. I ran a few halfs then too. This was about 20 years ago. I don't have a running log from then and I couldn't tell you what my PR from those days was, I just remember it was in the low 3's. Nowadays I know my marathon PR exactly along with a bunch of other race distance PR's. 5K, 10K, Mile, 800m, Marathon because I race those distances enough for them to be fresh.
I vote the Bros should give a T-shirt to whoever finds the race and time.
I ran in H.S. and college and continued to run up to the present time. I can remember my 5K and 10 K times but I would need to check on my 1/2 marathon and marathon times. Maybe it is just because I'm in my 60's but the real reason I don't know them is that I never ran anywhere close to what I should have at either distance.
Maybe he ran what hobby joggers refer to as a "13.1 marathon"?
I think we all need to get Paul Ryan to sign up for a marathon in the next few months and see what his time is.
