This is not a joke, I'm breastfeeding and need to bring my breast pump to the start or I'll be exploding milk during the race. Am I supposed to throw away my $400 breastpump, wtf!!
Rebecca? Rebecca De Mornay?!
Let's be Americans about this. Someone should lawyer up and sue them for whatever is applicable -- failing to provide conracted services, creating health risks, misleading consumers.... whatever. At the very least it would be a pain in NYRR's ass. It'd be a shame to wait for the inevitable case of post-marathon hypothermia to do it. Frankly, if I were registered this year, I'd do it just to ensure their lives suck a little bit more right now.
To the person whose friend works at NYRR: Tell her I'd like to see Mary run without her bag going on the elite truck to prove it. If she was against this: 1) rightfully put the blame on the city NOT YOUR CUSTOMERS 2) sack up and be inconvenienced along with the masses. Do you realize it makes them look even more pathetic (not sympathetic) that the "big bad city made em do it!" and they opted for a PR strategy of "you complained, so we're discontinuing service." ...? Fail.
I'm sure people looking for some prerace hydration and energy would help you with your problem. Leave the pump in the hotel.
Their new website is terrible.
When did baggage check start? None for the early races from Staten Island that's for sure.
Good idea. "Non delivery of goods or services" sounds right to me. Unfortunately I probably can't do it because I didn't register this year. I encourage someone who did and is pissed to fight for the masses.
There's a provision for people who need medication or the like at the finish. It's supposed to fit in a quart-size bag, but I bet you can get an exception if the pump is bigger than that. The medical director's e-mail: sweiss@nyrr.org.
The fact that only clear bags are allowed into the starting area sounds like there might have been some type of security concern??? possibly even intercepted? why wouldn't one be allowed to bring in a backpack? especially if they chose to leave it behind? Maybe, all the anger being directed at NYRRC, should be thought through a bit more....???
Or, maybe NYRR should've throught through the potential backlash. We're not idiots. This isn't a new exciting change which will enhance our experience. If there's more to the story we can handle it.
Sounds unlikely that the city would not renew a permit for an event that attracts 50,000 runners, plus family, into the city. What is the amount of money that the marathon brings to NY?
Sounds like NYRR needs to cut back the number of entrants so they can actually provide a decent marathon experience. Maybe put some more time standards in place and yes raise the price (as much as I hate that).
I was looking at running this marathon in the next few years. One of the major factors that kept me from not signing up is the logistical nightmare of getting up so damn early to get the Island and then sitting around for hours waiting for the start. With the baggage check decision, my mind has been made up. I will never run NYC.
Joe, I called out this bs story on this thread 3 pages ago.
The NYRR wasn't shy about passing the $60 cost of policing along. They would have said the NYPD / Park Commission made us. They didn't here. The city already issued the permit for 2012. If the CEO can't make decisions and stand up for them, then its time to get a new one.
As has been noted this change is a result of the NYRR getting greedy. They could transport bags for 30k but not 50K. Non-profit greed is an interesting phenomena.
The walk isn't that bad and eliminating a services because people compliant about it is no way to handle an issue. For example, I think the Cable company oughta get rid of their repairmen because that's the #1 complaint. Or maybe Direct TV should switch to using cables since their #1 complaint is getting knocked out every time it rains.
Looks like the NYRR might walk this one back:
Dear Runners,
Many of you have shared your concerns about the new ING New York City Marathon baggage policy, which was designed to provide a better and safer post-finish experience. We are listening and taking your feedback to heart.
We are working hard and talking with all involved parties to consider how we might address some of your concerns regarding baggage at the Marathon.
Thank you for your patience and we look forward to sharing more with you in the coming days.
