gotta admit that the chunder wr story is very inspirational, although he should have studied for his exam.

best two things combined beer miles are so much fun, for the people dissing this obviously they have never tried one and it's people like you why runners get a nerdy wrap.
where can i watch this???????
What is the bet Nick Symmonds is doing this to try and get a beer sponsorship after he breaks the WR. Free beer for a year, for life perhaps? Not a bad deal.
Businessman at his best.
he struggled thru that beer
He has opted out and will run the Commander's Cup finals in September instead. Most of the hotels in Stockton are full at this time. Good luck to all.
According to Twitter he ran 5:19.

Low class effort all around.
Stupid.
I remember running the beer mile - actually undefeated to this day (3-0, with a 6:02 pr). Then I grew up.
i know that the beermile.com "official world record" is 5:09 but hasnt AJ gone 5 02 or under 5? im pretty sure i know a guy that has run 5 07. i understand that would make it unofficial but still, 5 09 seems pretty slow for a "world record." I'm not saying i can get any where near that (i ran 7:10 or so while puking, which doesnt count) but that just seems like a slow time. i have personally seen several guys run between 5 20 and 5 30

THANK YOU.
Symmonds has now become an embarrassment.
I was willing to give him a pass on the Paris Hilton thing... Now it seems he is playing to his low IQ all the way.

Nick may not be the most "mature" person, but what's the big deal? He's serious when he needs to be, and has fun when he can.
nick is having fun. and has a great plan.
he's good looking as opposed to many of us with the refugee look, he has sexy women about, drinks a beer here and there.
why not make some easy money with what you got?
a beer promo seems like an excellent idea.
$$ to fuel the master plan, retire at 32, then move to the tropics. sip on a cold one pool side with a babe or two.
work on the tan, hit the gym for a couple of hours, then off to the sail boat and catch some fish.
i tell you that nick thinks good.

I understand this sentiment.
The thing is, if you are not educated to two of the biggest plagues in American health, then you would not know that celebrating drinking...syncs right in with a huge social problem...Alcoholism.
The two biggest blights on American life are work-a-holism and Alcoholism.
Do a little reading.
In America, we cover up the alcoholism stuff by making lots of jokes about it, and the word "drinking" figures in a lot of jokes.
He's not a kid any more.
He's done the beer mile before.
There is an old game called "Class, Status, or Tacky."
A beer mile is Tacky.
It is a lack of consciousness that leads people to think that a beer mile is funny and cool.
It is not, it is low class.
One day the buy is being interviewed on a major financial program about athletes and their rights to earn a living...and the next he is reverting to Freshman stunt.
The only way you can understand what a low class deal this is, is to imagine yourself in a higher station in life and think about the class of the athlete you want to sponsor.
Yuck, yuck, great when you are an undergrad.
NOT when you are a two time Olympian and hope to be a third.
Alcoholism is not just drunks in the gutter, it is anyone who has a regularly, planned relationship with alcohol.
It can lead from planning to get plowed to relieve stress on the weekend, or at the end of the month, to eventually being a functional alcoholic, to an everyday drunk, to losing it all and landing in the gutter.
Ask Henry Rono.
Or ask Steve Prefontaine.
Alcohol is not just this fun thing, yuck yuck.
It's a freaking drug, people.
Nick Symmonds has now brought his choices and his character into question.
He had the high ground representing athletes on rule 40.
Now he just looks like a déclassé dumb American.
It is not about fun, it is about CONTEXT. And if you don't get that, you have some thinking to do.
I've totally lost respect for Nick. (I.E., leave that beer mile shit to the idiots also rans - Champions don't go back to the gutter.)
You're right, he's not a kid anymore. So, now that he's an adult, he can legally drink and make his own choices, like choosing to do the beer mile. It is FOUR beers. That will barely get you drunk (if at all) and bringing alcoholism into the discussion just makes you sound like an idiot. What are you arguing, that chugging four beers after having a successful season as a pro runner will lead you into alcoholism? That the beer mile will lead him to drink more beer to "blow off steam." Give me a break. Believe it or not, millions and millions of people drink a beer now and then and get drunk once in a while and are not even close to ever becoming alcoholics. If you suffered yourself with it, that sucks, but that doesn't mean it will happen to everyone.
And don't even talk about Henry Rono or Prefontaine. Completely irrelevant. Rono was an alcoholic for many years, whereas Nick has never exhibited any signs of it. Prefontaine drank and drove. I don't see Nick planning to drive. Believe it or not, it IS extremely easy to drink and not drive, so why even bring driving up in your argument? It makes no sense at all. People complain about people like Rupp because he comes off as having no personality, but then people also complain about Symmonds when he does stuff like this. I don't get it.
For the record, I think it is awesome that he's doing this. Most runners are way to uptight and it's nice to see a pro runner who is not afraid to hoist a few and have some fun after the season.
You know what's worse than drinking some beers? Writing thousands of words about someone else's choice to drink some beers.
Where is the tatoo he had on his left arm?

While this will win him plenty of fans with the idiot masses running crowd -- it causes me to lose respect for the guy.
He runs a PR at the Olympics and then ends his season with 5 DL meets to go?
WTF?
Made enough money off the Nike contract already / afraid you are peaked and can't win anything so why try?
What gives?
Spoken like a hobby jogger that "races" every few weekends and has never focused all of their effort and geared all of their training for one final championship race in a season.

You are leading a sad lonely life. Drinking 4 beers and running a mile makes you question his choices and charachter? DO YOU FREAKING HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING! Are you actually that pathetic in real life? Or are you just an epic troll?
