If anyone had actually worn themselves out in that semi-final, then they would have been too stupid to beat Manzano in the first place. It was very clear that everyone in the field let Makhloufi have his heyday and decided to battle for second place and on.
He didn't mean in the semi, he meant in the final. The majority of the guys in contention chased Makhloufi down the backstretch, because they were intent on racing for the win, not just for a medal. But none could hang, so they all fell apart in the last 200m, which is when Leo snuck in for silver.
Without Makhloufi in the race, no one blows his load quite so early on the last lap, and Manzano likely doesn't medal. Yet another reason why it's so shitty when you have dopers in the race—not only are guys of their moment of glory, but the whole race may be irrevocably changed.
