Your body has the innate ability to heal itself, just stabilize it without invasive surgery and let it heal itself. Now its going to take twice as long, as soon as the vertebrae heal, the way they would with or without the rods, then he's going to have to have another surgery to get rid of the rods.

It's no joke. Rods are there because the spine has lost its structural integrity and must be supported. And then, yes, the body will heal the bones.

Yes, there is a chance he could fully recover and race professionally again. There is an equally small chance that he could never get much better than what was seen in the video. Neither outcome is set in stone, and what happens is entirely dependent on LV's ability and desire to rehab his injuries.
He most likely had the nerve damage as a direct result of the accident. Some additional loss of nerve function can be an inevitable result of the surgery, as things are moved around and put back together, but this is not typical.
We see it so often , non bikers ie : runners learning to bike , crash , they gain a little confidence and ride on the edge. Its takes years to build skills and be comfortable when riding hard.
He is young , he is fit and he will come back.

That may or may not have had anything to do with it. Extremely experienced pros crash and sometimes get badly hurt or die also. When cycling fast, one is always one small mistake or piece of bad luck away from a hellish crash.
The below story always struck me as particularly tragic. This young woman was just a few 100 meters away from possibly winning 1/4 million $'s. Then, in front of her family, she makes one small mistake and instead ends up dead.

As bad as it seems now, LV will get a second chance at a normal life unlike Sally Meyerhoff who was killed in a biking accident. He may not be what he was, but he will be functioning better than 99% of us.

From what I understand LV and a group of riders (tris/cyclists) were finishing a training bike ride around a three mile loop that entailed a hill climb. There had been a rain storm the previous night but LV said the weather was beautiful so they, not sure how many riders, went out for ride. The bottom of the ride turns a corner on the descent and there was a slight wash out of sand? This is where things get a little clouded. If they were doing loops the certainly must've of avoided that sand trap during the first two loops. However, on the last lap LV must have hit a thick part of the sandtrap/washout applied his brake he must have been in crouch position when he barreled over the handlebars hit his shoulder and neck impact on a guard rail.

I think these Olympic caliber riders should have assigned to them a designated "soigneur" who checks the road conditions before the riders set out. This accident could've been prevented by a soigneur getting out of his car and sweeping away the sand or setting up some orange cones.
Crash was at garden of the gods. Everyone that rides in Colorado Springs knows that loop really well. The corner where he crashed is pretty dangerous, but is well known to everyone that rides there.

Was this kid disrespected because he didn’t always run with his HS team? Was this kid disrespected because he left Oregon? cycling is dangerous but why stop if u love it. I was hit b a car and damaged my leg and hand. Thought i was going to lose a finger but did't. I still ride and if i die i die but i am carefull and more aware. Get well LV and get back to what u love.
