So after 4 events:
Eaton - 3,214
Hardee - 3,537
Hans van Alphen (Belgium) - 3,489
After the 400m, we can tell what kind of pace Eaton is on compared to the Trials.

He is currently 56 points under the world record pace from Trials before the 400. He has made up a little ground in the shot put and I am willing to bet he closes that gap a bit in the 400.
Needs 45.58 in 400 to get back on the same pace as he was when he broke world record. He is capable of it, but do not think he will go quite that fast. If he breaks record again he will most likely do it with a faster hurdle and better jav/discus.
Agreed. I think the 2nd day is where he needs to make up ground, although he did PR in the javelin & 1500m at the trials, so that is going to be a tall order. I also don't think the 45.58 is completely out of the question. We will see here shortly.
Uh oh, replay shows and Dwight Stones brought up fact that Hardee may have taken a few steps on/over the inside lane line on way to his 48.11. Stay tuned for more info.
They posted on IAAF Hardee's time, but how long do the officials have to review the heat?
Eaton - 46.90 for another 963 points.
IAAF is still giving Hardee his time as of now...
46.91 I think for Eaton. Quite obvious he is just going for gold and trying to win events. He sat and kicked that 400, even with the field at 300 and then blew them away in last 100.
Maybe he is going for day 2 pr?
All rules books are thrown out at the Olympics and Worlds. The Referee can do whatever he/she wants without regard to time constraints set by the rules.
Eaton 46.90.
Top 3 after day one:
Eaton 4661
Hardee 4441
Warner 4386
Hardee may have a long night of sweating out a possible DQ, unless protest period is limited to a certain period immediately following the event, we'll see.
Hardee is screwed...thanks to NBC
Day 1 Scores: according to IAAF website
Eaton - 4661
Hardee - 4441
Warner (Canada) - 4386
Kasyanov (Ukraine) - 4346
van Alphan (Belgium) - 4342

anyone know how long the protest window is??
i'd like to think none of the other competitors would use a technicality like this to eliminate his chances, but who knows. that would really suck!
I could see an official looking the other way and all other coaches doing the same. Multi eventers aren't the types that want to win on minor technicalities
Decathlon is one of those events where it is a brotherhood. Unless an official files the protest or one of the 'Team Managers' that has nothing to do with the athletes, no one will complain.
Remember the British protested and obtained DQ for the US men's early handoff in the last olympic 4x100m. The stick wasn't clearly passed, from what I remeber, but held by both runners, so not a clear advantage, but the sticklers DQd the US team. So you never know who wants to make a stink.
I wouldn't call running inside the lines a technicality. It's a clear advantage.
technicality was the wrong word to used. Anyways it would be a damn shame if someone called him on it.
I do think Hardee will be dq'd. If he had a huge point advantage over third, maybe not. However, he has only a 55 point lead over Warner and less than 100 pt lead over Kasyanov and Van Alphon. When medals are being contended, the rules will be adherred to.
According to the IAAF rule book any protest would have to occur within 30 min of the results being final. This occurred over an hour ago.
