why cant we hold 2:24 pace?
why cant we hold 2:24 pace?
The commentators here are very good.

how could flanagan and goucher not keep up with 2:24 pace for 18 miles? I would never have guessed that. weird.
Probably because they aren't running an even pace. Throw in some 5:10s and a bunch of people are going to blow up.
Does Shalane's vulture strategy have any chance here? She medaled in '08 by falling back and picking off dying gold medal chasers.
The Russian takes the lead!
Rooting so hard for a miracle from Flanagan.
French tv back on the marathon.
35km - Arkhipova takes the lead with Gelana, Jeptoo and Keitany. Kiplagat just off the lead pack. Flanagan 28 sec back.
russian to the lead. Eastern europeans win the marathon 2 in a row? that would be amazing. down to 4 in lead pack - kiplagat dropped again.
i dont know exact splits but it doesnt look like shes given up time in the last mile or so. closing in on 6th place. still out of sight a lot but top 5 wouldnt be impossible.
yep. new update is shalane 6th 0:27 back.

It was pretty obvious in how they gapped her that she didn't match that 5:10 mile.
Edna out of it. Arkhipova might just take this.
Kenyan water fuel/bottle disposal method: throw it straight down so it might trip up your competitor.
Ethiopian: Pretty much the same.
Russian: Carefully throw your bottle to the side of the road so no one trips on it. *
*pretty much what any civilized considerate runner would do.
E. African women, not so much.

Me too!!!!!! I wish she was in the position Archipova has
Flanagan hanging in.
36km - Flanagan 38 sec. back, appears to be fading. One should mention she's running all by her lonesome.
I'm just hoping she can pick off 5th. Too bad she couldn't latch on to the Russian and work back into the pack.
36.6 Kiplagat falling back. It's down to four: Keitany, Gelana, Jeptoo and Arkhipova.

sure, you're right - but they trained for that. they knew it was coming. i'd think flanagan would have done better for longer. that said, 5th or 6th ain't terrible.
All she needs is a little attrition and she's looking good.
This just in: Phelps stepped in a puddle and they gave him another gold medal.

definitely fading :(
kiplagat was 0:25 back and shalane is not that close to her. we're looking at 0:40+. big loss of time in the last mile
shalane 0:44 back and looking worse every mile
