But when you run 3:35 in a 3:36 semi-final heat loaded with talent? There's no excuse for such a flagrant waste of energy. After all, isn't that why he dropped out of the 800m? So why conserve in that case, but be wasteful elsewhere?
He ran a 3:42 in his semi. Willis and all the others that bombed ran in the quick 3:34 semi that was 8 seconds faster. 8 seconds!!!

Here's why I don't think there's much suspicious about his run.
2nd Manzano - is slower than Makhloufi over 1500 and 800. He should lose to him.
3rd Iguider - slower over 8 and 15. He should lose to him.
4th Centrowitz - slower over 8 and 15. He should lose.
5th Ingebritsken - slower over 8 and 15. He should lose.
6th Gebremedhin -slightly slower over 15, much slower over 8. Would have been more competitive in a faster race.
7th Kiplagat - Kiplagat should beat him but he should beat the other four in front so the question mark lies with Silas, not Makhloufi.
8th Tanui - slower over 8 and 15 but should have been further up. Ran badly.
9th Willis - half a second faster than Makhloufi but slower over 800, ran a faster semi. Teh run in Monaco probably took more out of him, or Makhloufi, managed his training better since then to recover from it.
10th - Mansoor Ali - slower than Makhloufi at 8 and 15 and past his best.
11th Chepseba - should have been up there, to beat Makhloufi in a fast race, or be beaten in a kick but the big question lies with his own performance.
12th Asbel - injured. On form he would have won.
Kiprop was injured, Chepseba ran stupidly in the first round and again here. Kiplagat has underperformed in championships before. It's no surprise that he beat the others.
REgarding his fast splits in the kick. He did 39 for the last 300m. He may have eased up a bit at the end but he had slowed before that. His burst was too much to sustain for 300m and he didn't.
In 2008 Asbel dropped a 25.2 from 1200-1400 in the FIRST round (3:41). Brannen and Lagat ran 25.3 and 25.2 for that section also.
Asbel ran ran a 12.4 back straight and 13.0 bend in teh semi (3:37). Iguider and Higuero ran 25.6 and 25.7 for that same 200m in the same semi (3:37)
In 2009, Asbel closed in 38.22 with a 12.3 down the back straight. Kamel did 38.45 for the last 300 to win (3:36). His 200 from 12-1400m wasn't as fast but he sustained the slightly slower pace.
Makhloufi's race wasn't THAT special. He has a very impressive acceleration but the actual speed he gets to is good but not absolutely super.
The race is what you'd expect of a 3:30/1:43 guy off that pace.
His progression from 3:34 aged 21, to 3:32 at 22 and 3:30 at 24 isn't ridiculous either.
He could be on drugs but so could any or every other athlete in that race!
Willis didn't recover from the rounds. Got it from the horse's mouth.
Great assessment.

Thanks for posting these split times, and also for your other very plausible comments to the subject.

Now the mens 1500 is over this is where suspicions should now be directed:

Interesting, thanks. I honestly feel bad for the guy.
You guys do realize that Manzano was faster from 1200-1300, 1300-1400, and 1400-1500 than anyone in the race right? He did not win due to 'not going with the algerian'. He just started from farther back! He handed those guys their heads easily and deserves all the respect of an OLY silver medalist.
true dat
