As a long time Cape resident I'm pretty disappointed to hear this. I loved coming down to Woods Hole to watch a good group of Americans and Africans race. This looks like it is just going to scare the Americans away.

With lower prize money and higher appearance fees it may work the other way around.
Appearance fees? Hahaha. This is Falmouth. In the past they don't even provide travel unless you finish in the Top 10. An Olympian who DNFs? Sorry, no travel money for you. Obviously their philosophy has changed with a new race director but I doubt it includes appearance fees. The Board is similar to previous years and I'm sure that would be a Board of Directors call.

Am I the only one to notice this? Falmouth gets a new race director, prize money gets SLASHED. what a shame if true! and they apparently have Larry Barthlow as elite athlete coordinator, perhaps that explains the elite status going down?

Sounds like getting a Solinsky to show up to do a tempo run and collect an appearance fee.
Oohhhhhhh....Ahhhhhhhhh!
I hope my friends beat him.

It seems like the new admin. feels that Americans are "not deserving" of their own prize money and travel, so they slashed it from the budget. "If they can't get in the top money spots they don't deserve to be here. What was the best liked race for Americans may soon have no top americans.
No appear $$ is offered so if they ever get the best Americans (Ryan, Meb, Rupp, Shalene or Desi) they will have paid big bucks. The Best American Road Race will lose its modifier.
They are making many, many changes, some will be good, some will be not good. The future will tell.
Get rid of Barfrow!
Dr. Jones, Dr. Jones...Larry Barthlow looks kind of like Mola Ram, the bad guy in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom...when are races going to drop this guy to the crocs, like Indiana Jones did!

Seems like Falmouth is going forward without Americans.
Top US Men in 2011 were: Brian Olinger (4), Abdi (London) (5), Ben True (6),
Ed Moran (8), Sean Quigley (listed for 2012), Brett Goucher (10). Only Quigley listed as an Elite for 2012., with Abdi on OLY team.
Top US Men in 2011 were: Madgelena Lewy-Boulet (1) Janet Cherborn-Bawcon (London), Kim Conley (6) (London), Jeannette Faber (7), Blake Russell (8) and Kathy Newberry (9) (London). No word on bringing back the 2011 Champ, while three other women (Cherborn-Bawcom, Conley, and Newberry) are in London. The others are not listed in the elite list.
Bye-bye USA!

also i read tim nelson is running falmouth, so there are at least 3 good americans solinsky, pudeskra, and nelson, so apparently the race IS NOT scaring off the americans.
isnt larry barthlow the elite director for the dubai marathon?
that race last year had the deepest elite field in marathon history, so lets give barthlow a chance for a few years to create excellent fields, rather than knocking him before his first race as elite field director at falmouth.
remember it is hard to get top runners to come in august as it is the heart of the european track season, and this year falmouth is on the last day of the olympics, so it is very unlikely anyone could have got a lot of top americans to falmouth, rupp, ritz, teg, jager, lagat, lomong etc. are busy.

No
I think the response about more travel $$ is BS. They don't even make it clear to athletes what the policy on travel funding is. I have never heard of any appearance fees at Falmouth. Oh, and many of the Americans that I spoke with at the race today said they either had a hard time getting a bib number or trouble securing housing. Ridiculous.
Only three Americans (all women) earned prize money this year. Last year Falmouth was proud to announce the equal American prize purse and then this year they completely cut it? Make up your minds on what is important!
