Probably some kid from Southeast Portland OR went on a tour of Kenya, escaped to a Kenyan government office and pleaded for asylum to escape his miserable existence.

How did that come about?
His name is Jason Dunford. He was born in Kenya and has represented the country successfully at many major championships.
At the Beijing Olympics he set an Olympic swimming record in the prelims of the 100m butterfly and eventually came 5th in the final behind Phelps.
He is one of the senior Olympians in the team and in the absence of Rudisha (the captain) and some of the senior track stars was chosen to carry the flag.
And so what??? Does it matter he's white???He's a Kenyan. If langat carries US flag will that be funny???
the kkk made them do it.

Yeah, I expect the USA, GB, France and a few others to have very diverse looking teams. I did not expect Kenya to have very much diversity. In fact, their delegation is not diverse. It looked like only two white dudes among the group. It was just a by of a surprise to see. That's all.
The Kenyan team is very diverse on the contrary:
- Kalenjin, Masai, white Kenyans...
Diversity goes beyond the colour of the skin, especially in Africa.
The distance runners all got spooked by the 'over-zealous' anti-doping officials and scurried back into the mountains until closer to their event.
Whatever the case ...that was AWESOME!!! I am sure Al Sharptonn will have a nothing to say about that. GO Kenya!!!

What other kind of swimmer is there?
There is a black swimmer on the US team.
Wow, Kenya sure does sound diverse
Non-African groups (Arabs, Indians and Europeans) are estimated to total to about 1%
Wow this board is full of race obsessed morons. I can try to deal with the moron part of you. But, the part that belongs to KKK, I can not.
It's the most racist, xenophobic group in the world, bar none. If it were an Olympic event, the US would win hands down. Perhaps the country really does deserve the Sandusky's and Holmes' of the world. That is the saddest part of what should/could be a more tolerant country - it also breeds a lot of monsters.

What threads like this prove is that people, letrunners, need to get out of the basement and see the real world.
Blond and blue-eyed Mexicans and South Americans. Vietnamese and Chinese with european roots. Indians (India not American) with British Roots.
Africa has a lot of Indians, Dutch and British descendents. They are citizens of the countries they live in, not of the counties their decedents came from. If that were the case, then all Olympic athletes are competing for Africa.
That's the guy we traded for Lagat. He was a minor league prospect at the time

I would be more impressed if Kenya had a white distance runner carry their flag!

I would be more impressed if all of y'all would STFU and just let people compete.
As stupid as usual are the Kenyan team organizers. The person to bear the flag could have been David Rudisha or Vivian Cheruiyot.
It doesn't matter if that Lopez thing is a Kenyan or not, he doesn't deserve bearing the flag as he is a nobody in the sports as we speak.
If he's Kenyan, I can tell you exactly how he got to the Olympics. He grew up swimming to school.
Considering all of South Africa is loaded with whites, its not surprising at all that Kenya managed to get some.

Dunford is the most accomplished swimmer in Kenyan history, and one of the most accomplished in all of Africa. He also has ancestry going back to England, which may have been a reason for selection to celebrate their connection to the Commonwealth.
Lomong is the definition of the American Dream. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Though he isn't as athletically accomplished as many other Americans, his story shows something unique about America and definitely warranted his selection as flag bearer.
And for the record that Lopez thing is not Kenyan.
