I enjoyed it, but it was pretty much a given that a lot of americans wouldn't like it.

Amazing tribute to the National Health Service. Every great nation needs one.
Gotta agree with the OP. I was watching it with a group of people, and everybody thought it was horrible. We turned it off.

The whole thing zipped by so fast it was hard to tell anyone from anyone...except when they paused on some NBA players...
I doubt Salazar wanted him or Mo spending that much time on their feet, even with a week to go for their races...
I thought maybe I missed seeing Rupp because he was walking with Mo in the UK delegation....you know, he usually follows Mo everywhere...
Or maybe it just sucked... Just my opinion though.

This is why these other countries want us to vote in Obama. He of course will play right along with this weak butt stuff. What a joke this all was. Romney don't play..I'm telling you. He only will accept the best efforts and best outcome in the world. He literally brings in the best teams in the world to sabotage (training wise) the existing efforts. He can't help being a little worried about security at London. He would have had Israel's YaMaM combined with USA Navy Seals playing saboteur training attacks for the last 6 months at London. London would have been way ready. Romney don't play.
Romney loved it.

Romney never did anything in his life on his own. He's a rich spoiled fanboy. I take that back, he beat the hell out of small boy and cut his hair because he was gay. Other than than that what has Romney ever done on his own ? He would have done the world a bigger favor by taking videos at track meets, impersonating the real media, like the fanboys we all love do at the meets we compete at.
You sound like an operative from MoveOn.Org - the organization committing voter fraud by mailing out millions of partially filled out voter registrations here in Virginia to dead people, pets, youth, etc.
Mitt Romney donated the money he received from his father as an inheritance and built his business himself. What has Obama ever done? He was a community organizer. Wow, that sure prepared him to lead the largest economy in the world. Give me Romney anyday.

youYanks just have no class. Best opening, down to Earth, honest, warm, positive, great rouch with the youngsters lighting the flame
Brits - understood opening ceremony
Yanks - didn't understand opening ceremony, therefore dismissed it as low-quality
'Why choose 7 teenage athletes to light the olympic flame'
Ever hear of an unknown teenager called Ron Clarke. Steve Ovett thought this was a good idea and his opinion I rate more than anyone one here
If no shot at topping Beijing better to try something different which is what was done. What was so great there anyway?

I knew americans just wouldn't get it - I'm glad it wasn't a cheese fest like 84 and 96. We knew we would never match Beijing in terms of the military style mass coordination of people - we wanted to do our own thing. It was a celebration of Britishness and went down well in the UK.
+1
It was brilliant. It had a narrative and the choice of music was great. It was the first time I've actually watched the whole ceremony. Most in the past are just sterile and boring. The Brits have a good sense of humour and can be self-deprecating, a quality lacking in many other nationalities.
I thought the technical and visual aspect of the cauldron and lighting was amazing, and I think the choice of 7 (likely future Olympians, not just random kids) young sportsmen/women from a variety of sports and nominated by Olympic heroes from the past was inspired. It fits in entirely with the original pledge in 2005 that this would be a Games to inspire a generation of Youth and to leave a long term legacy.
Well done Danny Boyle!

Ok, I think I understand now. The theme was the decline of the British Empire and how it no longer can compete with the other great nations of the world. Quirky opening ceremony, focus on youth was all about multicultural sexting, the Queen looked ancient, tired, and bored, and Paul McCartney's voice was shot (though I thought he gave an inspired performance).
Well done, Danny Boyle. Actually, he screwed up the fireworks...they looked fantastic and modern.

http://vimeo.com/20595482The problem was they got the scale wrong.
They took a Broadway show and blew it up too big to be readable. What the Chinese got right was that they dropped the narrative and used large scale, abstract movements that didn't need a TV narrator to explain.
Compare it to a wedding. Every wedding has a bride and groom. church. ring exchange. procession. band. cake. You can only blow that up so big that it doesn't fit in a stadium. If you want to represent marriage at the stadium scale you have to do something like they did in 2008 and not just narrate it for TV.
This was easily the worst thing I've seen on TV in my entire life. Easily surpassing the CNN's coverage of the 2000 election, Season 4 of Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, The 2011 Beef O' Brady's Bowl (FIU vs. Marshall), and Robin Williams on Letterman in 2009.
