I wonder which state has the oldest mile/adjusted 1600 record. Here in Texas the record is 4:03.8 by John Robinson (Danger, Will Robinson!) from 1980. That's a 22 year old record, but I'll bet that's not in the top ten oldest. What about your state?

Before Don Sage ran the 1600 in 3:58.9 in 2000, the adjusted mile record had been held since 1961 by Tom Sullivan in 4:02.4. Craig Virgin ran a 4:04.1 1600 in 1973. Not bad if you can hold any record for 39 years. Virgin holds the oldest track (not field though) record on the Illinois books when he ran an adjusted 3200 in 8:38.7, also in '73. Sage ran 8:42.89 when he was a double state champion in 2000.
Marty Liquori (NJ) 3:59.8 set in 1967. Still stands.
Certainly not the oldest, but Maine's record of 4:08.xx was set in 1983. As far as the oldest, I assume Ryun's Kansas record still stands.
Gerry Lindgren 4:01.5 WA 1964
Uh.....didn't someone named Ryan run 3:58-something in the Kansas State Meet way back in 1965? And wasn't that the ONLY time anyone has ever broken 4 min is a high school-only race.
Oops, a senior moment. I meant RyUn.

Yes he did and yes it was
Why bother converting from the mile to 1600m? Sage's record was a full mile (4:00 at Pre Classic).
The question was about the OLDEST state mile record. 1964 actually came BEFORE 1965, shocking as it may now seem.
