What is the point of this thread? Mottram used to be a great runner. It's not like his greatness somehow makes Rupp any less of a runner as the OP seemed to be insinuating.

No, I am NOT insinuating that Rupp is any less of a runner because he is not as good as Mottram was at 5000m and less. Rupp is still what Rupp is, and you'd have to be a moron to not recognize that. But let's also acknowledge that all this talk of how great Rupp is rings a bit hollow when a dose of reality is served up to the unwashed, of which you appear to one.
Mottram's times were run when drug testing was half as aggressive/effective as now. More likely that Rupp is clean.

lol
After Paris, it is clear that something new is on the market.
SPMBLNPF wrote:
Well, if THAT is invalid, then Rupp's superiority at 10,000m is invalid, as Mottram never focused on that, either, at least not in his prime.
This whole thread is ridiculously stupid. Two white long distance runners, yes, but their focuses are different. This whole THREAD is invalid.

Yes, those gosh darn Ethiopians always get the latest drugs... Poor USA/Europe can't keep up with their technology...
So a 10,000m runner who's still improving doesn't have as good of 1500, mile, 2-mile, and 5k PRs as a 15-5k runner in his prime.
Great point.

Rupp is NOT still improving. That is the whole point. There is NO EVIDENCE that Rupp is still improving. Rupp's 26:48 doesn't look that great when you consider that Kenenisa and Rotich beat him, and Kenenisa had dropped out of the WC 10,000m a few weeks before, and Rotich cannot make the Kenyan Olympic team, so Rupp has NO CHANCE against the big boys. Galen improved through 2011, but it is easy to see he has plateaued, as he could have broken 13 in 2011, and that 26:48 just meant that in great conditions he was pulled along in a time trial. It was nice, but NOTHING compared to the men in Paris.

No, because the their best runners aren't mask wearing, thyroid medication taking, goofy looking pollen-count following nimrods.
You don't know what their runners are because they and their coaches are not transparent and covered every minute on the internet by message board RATS like yourself.

You are a festering pool of excrement.
The guy just recently ran a PR in the 5,000, at the START of his season, and you write that he is not still improving?
You are clearly the dumbest cluck on this board.

It's fascinating that you feel this way and yet every time I choose a name on here, you actually attempt to use the same name, which is what most people do when they have a man crush on somebody, or else they idolize somebody.
To the point. Galen ran a 12:58.90 at the Pre Classic, and it is possibly the fastest 5000m that he'll ever run, and his ceiling is 12:55, as I've mentioned before. I do know ceilings. Galen is NOT improving, OK. Why the hostility?
Until Rupp has a major championship medal, there is no argument. Mottram is the best Non-African distance runner of the last 20 years
OK. You started a thread that says Mottram was a better 5000m runner than Rupp.
Well done.
Who was better between Mottram and Bob Schul?

Why are you comparing him to Mottram, exactly? What do they have in common other than skin color? Mottram's not even in Rupp's league anymore, so it's not like he'll be contending for a medal.

Sigh.
Galen ran 12:58.9 at PRE which wasn't the best conditions. If He ran in Paris he could of probably broke the AR if not sub 12:50.
2. Isaiah Kiplangat KOECH KEN 12:57.63 (12:48.64 Paris)
3. Galen RUPP USA 12:58.90
4. Kenenisa BEKELE ETH 13:01.48 (12:55.79 Paris)
5. Thomas Pkemei LONGOSIWA KEN 13:03.88 (12:49.04 Paris)
6. John KIPKOECH KEN 13:06.71 (12:49.5 Paris)
7. Yenew ALAMIREW ETH 13:06.84 (12:48.77 Paris)
10. Albert ROP KEN 13:12.47 (13:01.91 Heusden- Zolder)
11. David Kiprotich BETT KEN 13:21.35 (13:09.84 Rabat)
How many international championship medals does rupp have? How about mottram?

In all fairness, Kipkoech fell down, but I seriously doubt he would have beaten Rupp. He might have broken 13, depending on how he finished. Either way, you can clearly say that Paris was significantly faster than Pre.
rupp has possible prelim line of fit ~
51.8 / 1'48.8 ->
3'32.9
4'49.1
7'24.9
12'44.9
26'33.6
( the paris 5k gives strong support & top-3 guys there were certainly capable of sub-12'45 with perfect pace & quicker than 12'50 pace target at 3k - the winner looked nearer 12'40 shape with that 54 finish )
buster had pbs in different years, but i'd bet his peak was '06 in that epic 5k v choge ( he mighta been faster at 1500/mile other years, but 5k was his medal distance )
i'd offer him a prelim line of
50.8 / 1'47.6 ->
3'32.0
3'48.7
4'48.9
7'26.5
8'01.4
12'51.7
26'58.3
( forget the 10k - he wasn't running that of just 5k/1500 training )
rupp is potentially helluva lot faster over 5k ( & lesser extent 3k ) than mottram ever was
they are not even in same ballpark as far as 5k is concerned if they both ran their perfect races
