Tom Byers has a PB of 3:50.8 in the mile. He ran 3:39 in the 1500 in that "famous" race. None of the non As have the talent/ability to run a 3:50.8 mile (does anybody in the field have a 3:50.8?). Therefore, a solo effort would probably yield them something like a 3:40. They stay home with a 3:40. Please do not be a Tom Byers in this case. I can't even believe that this is suggested by somebody who has race the 1500 competitively before.
Excellent point! what they really need to pull off is a Peter Rono in the '88 olympic finals or Elliott in the '60 finals, I think both of them ran close to the current Olympic 'A' standard in the Olympic finals by running out in front the last 800 meters
By the way, on a related topic, for future Olympic trials in the distance and mid distance events, I wonder if USATF would consider paying one or two rabbits to take the pace out at roughly the 'A' standard pace for the first half of the race...that solves two predicaments:
1. Find which individuals are most capable of coming through the heats and running an Olympic finals worthy performance
2. Give the pre-trials non-'A' standard performers a chance at making it in the Olympic team
