I did not make the team.
I did not make the team.
Are you the guy from that movie "Office Space"?
The old two camera coverage. Coverage sure has gotten better.
Thanks for sharing Bill. Looks like you had a real shot.
Sorry.
SWEET shoes on the trainer in the all-green Oregon outfit.
Bill, thats not 1976 thats 1980 qualifying heats.

I thought that looked a bit more recent than 1976.
Bill did not post this video, I think he would know what years he competed in the Olympic Trials. He was 5th in 1976 and this video was from 1980 when he was ruptured his achilles.
malmo, you remember this?
very cool to see a young Henry Marsh..not yet in his prime.
did I also see a young John Gregorek in the pack, or am I mistaken?

These guys were animals. Many in the pack were averaging between 130-150mpw consistently. I know Marsh & Co. were doing mile repeats x 4 between 4:00-4:05. Just brutal workouts.
yeah, those asics spikes he's wearing came out in 79.
Clearly 1980. One of the runners is wearing an Athletics West singlet. AW was formed in 1977.
Actually, looking at the results, Marsh ended up winning the final and setting an AR at 8:15.68. So I must amend my statement. He was definitely very close to his prime. Young Mr. Gregorek ran 8:21 to place 3rd behind Doug Brown. George Malley just missed the final, as the 13th fastest out of the heats.
Almost all this 1980 OT stuff was lost to memory and the dust of history due to the Olympic boycott, so this video was a great flashback to some great performances.
Even though its titled 1976.
There is virtually no footage of the '76 Trials that I can find. Pity. I'd love to see Wohlhuter in the 800 and 1500.
3 questions:
Which guy is Malmo?
Was this just a semi or the actual final? Some of the guys behind the top 3 look like they could have made an attempt to pass but never went for it on the final straight.
Why were the 1980 Olympics cancelled?
Thanks guys.
This was the semi-final. Malmo was not in this heat. 6 went to the final. Time was like 8:30 for front group. Not bad for 32 years ago. Probably pretty close to semi's in Eugene this week.

Thank you. I wam hoping to one day compete in the Steeple and this was awesome to watch. I didn't get to see any of this year's semis, so hopefully we can see some of the finals.
