Similar to Iowa
as in "the weather" is similar to what it was in Iowa a few years back. Hmmmm, ya don't suppose the folks from Fayetteville...
Stanford, softened by mild California weather, will tank big-time in the cold (high of 35F) and windy (NNE @ 10 mph gusting to 24 mph) conditions in Indiana. Arkansas looks to win with seasoned Colorado and Wisconsin gamely giving chase.
Frigid Monday in Terre Haute:
I think people are making way too big a deal about the effects of cold weather. If the temperature out there is 38 degrees F then it just means, if anything, that all of the runners out there will achieve homeostasis better than if it were 75 degrees. We are not talking arctic temperatures here. At most you are looking at people needing to take their warmup a little bit more seriously.
One small detail of the Ewing Theory was forgotten. The team at hand has to have never won any significant titles with the Ewing Theory eligible athlete. Last year Colorado won NCAAs, pretty significant. The whole thing is founded upon an athlete being overrated, which is justified by the team having never won a title. Since Ritzenhein played a huuuge role in Colorado winning last year, he is not overrated.

There is a huge difference between 35 and 18 or whatever it was a couple of years ago.

Nov 20, 2000...AMES, Iowa. Braving temperatures in the teens and a wind-chill factor below zero, four members of the University of Arkansas mens cross country team placed among the first 25 finishers Monday as the Razorbacks claimed their 11th cross country national championship and third in a row at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa.... Hope I didn't violate and copyrights.
By golly, you are right. Please do excuse my sloppy use of the word "similar." How 'bout if I had said, "It appears that the NCAA Div1 Cross Country Championships will again be held in November. Detail minded followers of the sport will recall that there have been times when the Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas won the event when it was held in the month of November in other years.
Side note: I think we are about to see one of the best championship contests in years. Go Hogs.
Rivers Malkmus, you beat me to it. To repeat, a main aspect of the Ewing Theory is the fact that the team has never won a major championship with the athlete in question.
Therefore, the Ewing theory doesn't apply to Ritz and Colorado.
Forget the Ewing Theory.
Here is the Boykin Theory:
1. Ritz's injury has been fake all along.
2. Ritz has been training between 2am and 4am in the morning to avoid prying eyes and has 16 weeks of over 110 miles per week under his belt.
3. Ritz wins it all in triumphant "comeback" making the NCAA cross country meet a huge media success
4. Colorado wins team title.
5. Cross country/Tf becomes number one spectator sport in the US.
6. Mark Wetmore elected President.
So simple. So obvious. The Boykin Theory.
Also, if the Ewing theory looked promising, wouldn't coaches start getting rid of their star athletes in order to improve their team's chances?
The latest weather forecast is 40 degrees/sunny by afternoon. People, that is not even close to what it was in Ames a few years ago (30 below windchill!!!!!!!!!!!) The weather will not be a factor. Stanford wins, Arkansas , Wisconsin and Colorado (Northern Arizona a close 5th)
The weather won't hurt Stanford because they will run in a pack between 6th-20th place and protect each other.
Uh, the windchill at Ames was NOT 30 below, numbnutz, and the forecast for Terre Haute is for a high of 36F with winds out of the NNW at 6-16 yielding a windchill just below freezing. Whether or not it was like Ames really has nothing to do with the fact that Stanford has seen nothing like this in either training or racing, anyway... they aren't hardy. Watch them freeze then bomb out.
