Crossfitter Brian Mackenzie on running - This is hilarious

Yeah, there was a bunch of crossfitters out running tonight as I passed the local box. I rolled past them as i slogged along trying to keep my hr under 70%.

Im confused. So BM says just going out and packing the miles at a slow pace is not beneficial yet he runs ultras? You would think he would be going out and running 5ks on the roads or mile fun runs.

xfit... Interesting that most of their workout routines were stolen from truly intense sports. I did most of this stuff 20 years ago as a HS wrestler... HIIT isn't a new principal and maybe they should stop acting like they invented this stuff. It is a valid workout principal but should not be the only thing people are doing. Everything has it's place and stop acting like people that only do crossfit are fast. Everyone must recognize that these guys are making decent money training guys that don't feel like they measure up either..

I believe his claim is that you don't need to train long and slow to run long and slow.

Well, it finally makes sense then. If his goal is to race slow, then he should keep doing what he's doing. Silly me, I thought the point of even long races was to go faster than the other people.

if he were actually running, say, 8 minute flat pace, he'd be done around 13 and 1/3 hours, if it were a flat course

Angeles Crest is anything but flat. However, it's instructive to look at how the course record was set at 17:35, by Jim O'Brian in 1989. He peaked at 200 miles a week, almost all of it on the course. Specificity matters. If you want to run far, you have to run far.

In all fairness, workouts don't need to be long. A 30-40min full body workout lifting session 3 times a week goes a very long way. That's under two hours per week and you can look muscular yet very low bodyfat. It is possible.

Fact: if you eat mostly protein, you'll have a hard time getting fat. If you want to get fat, the fastest way is to eat carbs, lots of carbs. Fat isn't bad but you won't get enough protein if you eat a lot of fat.

He was talking about fat not protein

That all sounds good and easy till you get to say about mile... 65 and you are running up a mountain at 9,000 ft. F*ckin arrogant letsrunner who does his cooldowns at 8 min pace so he thinks he can AC 100 miler at it. Please

yo dude, didn't know if it was a flat course or not. 27 hours is still pretty bad

I didnt say 27 hours wasnt terrible. It is. But 8 min pace is outrageous to think of.

So you think runners don't benefit from a low bf% while being strong? The appearance is just a side effect of CROSSFIT ELITE training.

Anyway yes, I believe athletes should look like athletes and not like war camp survivors.
