Isn't German's family from El Savador? Last I looked that was not part of Mexico.

Also, last I heard people can pronounce their name any way they wish. If he really wanted to distance himself from his heritage he change his last name to jones, or smith, or dork, and maybe his first name to fluffy.

Nope dope he's 100% Mex

German needs to run a 3:33 to auto qualify for the US Trials. He can run the trials with anything under 3:39, but he won't make the cut due to too many others that are under 3:39, but faster than German. The Field will be closed before they get to his time.

I am one of the kids harshest critics but also one of his biggest fans. I still think that running for that know-nothing at OSU was the worst career decision he could have made. He could have trained under his manager at Applebees and ended up running 3:55 his freshman year. He was still running on fumes from his HS summer.

Don't get me wrong, OSU has a great squad, but it has nothing to do with coaching and everything to do with recruiting, which probably had a lot to do with having the golden boy on the team.

That being said, I would love to see him set the world on fire and become the next great American miler/5k runner, but it's not going to happen in Stillwater.

Hopefully he goes back to his HS coach

I don't know why you said 3:39 when this entire thread is about Fernandez running 3:37, but Fernandez is in the trials as his time is the 27th best and they are taking 30. Full list below:

By the way, athletes need to declare no later then 2 days before their event.

Anyone saying negative things in this thread has either very little understanding of running or very little knowledge of German Fernandez. I've actually never been a huge Fernandez fan, but to ignore this is a good sign is idiotic.

As a high schooler, he was injured junior year, came back to have one of the greatest high school seasons ever. 2-mile record, sick state meet double, etc.

Follows that up with a great, but injury prone, freshman year. NCAA champ, junior 5k record, junior world record I believe in the indoor mile. Following his freshman year up till now he has repeatedly been injured.

SIX WEEKS before NCAA's he was not running. In that time he went from an early May 3:43, to a 3:40 at NCAA's, to a 3:37 10 days later. One of america's greatest distance prodigy's is healthy and improving quickly. Please argue this logic.

OK, I'll tell you why I can't stand German and wish him no success.

First of all I am a loser. I was born a loser and will always be a loser. I have no talent and what little abilities that I do have I have never really used them.

Now Fernandez is super talented, has shown toughness in working through a seemingly unending series of setbacks, and is now beginning to show glimpses of what he can do.

When this kid is busting 3:28 in a couple of years, the haters on this thread are gonna look silly.

Its supposed to be pronounced the way he pronounces it, which is German. I really don't know how people can debate this. If he pronounces it German than its not Hermahn, herman, or anything else.

Actually the Spanish pronunciation would be more like "Hair-mahn". But since he says it is really "German" so be it.

This is a ridiculous statement. His freshman year he lost only two track races, both 5k's. He was never once challenged in the 1500/mile. He ran a world jr record in the mile and essentially set/tied a then collegiate record. That indoor race was more impressive than his 13:25, and if he had got into some real 1500 races outdoors he would have probably run 3:34. People seem to only look at the times from 3 years ago as if the circumstances are irrelevant. Fact is he was challenged big time in both his 5k's which is why he ran such great times, and fact is he ran 355.02 solo in the mile indoors. Obviously no one can prove what he would have run in 2009, but given his solo 355.02 indoors and never losing to anyone in the 1500/mile that year being NCAA champion in the 1500, you can bet 3:39.00 was not what he was capable of. If he'd never run in an elite 5k, he probably would have finished with a 13:40 if he ran that solo.

German does not have the speed required to be a top miler. Never had it. Never will. He would ALWAYS get blown out of the water on the kick by a Centro, Andrews, Wheating, Manzano (on a good Leo day), Lagat...

If you are unable to see that then you do not understand the sport.

Wait asecond here! Is this BS or is there actually some truth to this????

It says on the website that they are going to do 3 heats of or totalling 30 runners? What does this actually mean? What if in theory there had been 400 guys that ran under 3:39 before the deadline? They would all have the right to work their way through the various heats in order to arrive at that final field of runners. The more that qualify, the more heats, they (the organizers) will need to run right? Depending on the physical numbers?

This seems pretty obvious but could get tricky with too many bodies on the track and if you have to run an extra round or two to get into the final field, your gunna get ground down a bit and start to burn out (maybe?) Please shed some light.........

3:39 is not an auto-qualifier, in other words it does not guarantee you a spot, it only makes you eligible. They will take the top 30 fastest qualifiers.
