FWIW, I vote for Viren '72 over Puttemans, Gammoudi, etc. in the 10,000, and Garderud '72 (or was it '76?) winning the steeple with a WR only because Baumgartl hit the last barrier.

Bekele really takes it to the lads with the pace! But gets bronze.
Lookout for Kipchoge, Koech (18 years old!) and Soi at the Olympics, these men want medals!

It was 1976. I was in the stands. It was a great race...trust me. 2nd placer had to hurdle a barrier and then hurdle Baumgartl. And resulted in my favorite ever steeplechase quote. They asked Baumgartl if he would have won if he had not hit the barrier. He said something like "In the steeplechase you are not supposed to hit the barrier." He got it spot on; that is the event. Garderud jogged in for a WR after the fall.
The Viren '76 5000 was exciting, too. Three mile converts took a shot at him in the final lap (Dixon, Quax among them) and he outran them. He not only won the 10K, but placed high in the marathon--his first.

If you're gonna do a best 3000m steeplechase, I'd like to put in a vote for 2003 world championships of Kemboi v. Cherono (Shaheen). Epic race.

Yeah, that race was the craziest. Don't think it has much competition for best in the steeple. Maybe even best in track IMHO. Vid is on YouTube.
The best 5000 in history was the 1997 Zurich GP meet, where Haile Gebrselassie blew Daniel Komen out of the water to break the world record in 12:41. Komen ran 12:44, Paul Tergat was third in 12:49.

I know right? As Lloyd is STILL coming off the final turn, you can see the field clock reading 13:13. That is basically an 11.5 second final 100meters(roughly). not bad at all.
These videos rock and are so inspiring.
Thanks guys for posting. They are really appreciated.
Finally a good meaningful post.
