I assume you're kidding, right? If not, how the fvck do you know that you're "pretty much always accurate to within 1/4 mile" without GPS? Do you measure it with your car or on a map after you run?
Anyone who ran with The Jamul Toads/B Team back in the 80s and 90s can verify this story.
For years I ran with Dale Fleet and Steve McCormack around the Mission Bay area of San Diego. There were a combination of several different routes, ranging from 8 - 15 miles. No GPS, some street, sidewalk, cut across grass, up the side of a bridge, down the boardwalk along the beach. We didn't take splits it was just 10 mile tempo on Monday, easy 8 on Tue/Thu 8 -10 on Friday and 1000s on the grass at ski beach on Wed. Long run from Diamond and Lamont on Sunday. I was told what the distance was for the 8, 10, 13, and 15 mile routes. Never questioned the distance, just tied my shoes and held on for dear life on many runs!
Well Dale Fleet had some knee surgery and took to his bike to maintain some finess, and at some point decided to measure the route, and paint some mile markers....I swear to God, right where Mac told me, "this is about 6 miles right here Army Boy"...was with in 50 feet. Further, each route was actually long...by about 200-400 meters..
