After reading your guide to the meet tonight I had a few things to throw out there.
Being a former elite my self, I’ll start off by saying in regards to the elite guys they prefer the system at OXY because they want fast times, and they know that the best way to get fast times is to have a few guys capable of running fast in one heat. Like I’ve stated before if you have 1,000 3:30 guys toe the line on the same track someone is running over 4 minutes.
Beyond that I think it was Rojo who just gave a wonderful analysis in one of the Jock threads about how much longer you have to run in a crowd versus the very inside of lane one. Why would you want that in a race that is run for time? The truth of the matter is that the best shot anyone has to make the Olympics is to have the A before the trials, and running stacked heats would be counterproductive to this. So why bash the idea of equal heats in the guide to the meet? Because you want track to be a spectator sport for the fans? Well this is how I see it.
Having a “stacked heat” in every single race is like having an NBA all-star game every weekend. I for one as a fan am really excited by the chance that we could see 3 heats go 3:35 and 1:45. I mean that is awesome. I imagine telling someone who didn’t know while we were watching the meet:
This next heat should be just as good.
“Are you saying I just watched a bunch of guys run sub 3:35 and now I get to watch another bunch of guys run 3:35?”
And again after that in the third heat.
“WHAT??”
Yeah there will be speculation, what if Torrence were in the fast heat, what would he have run who would he have beaten, but that is also part of the fun. It’s hype and anticipation that gets built up by speculation that's a huge part of why mainstream sports are so popular. We’ll have more speculation after this meet tonight than any other race all year. I can’t think of a better set up to the trials, which should be our superbowl where all the best guys race for all the glory.
