How come this idiot had to enter a race to run that slow? He could've easily did this on his own somewhere.

Gaspirilla (spell?) 15k in florida...February 2009...Hall ran a pretty good race there. Alone from the gun. Its on flotrack. watch it. Last good non marathon race.
Because you do not get $50,000 for a training run anywhere else. Thank you Mary.
I still don't get why he ran this slow. In full training with no taper he should still be about to have gone faster unless he really just isn't in shape. I know kanuchi would do the same thing but I just don't get it.
according to iaaf, his 10k pr, set in 2007, is 28:07
If he had won going away in 27:30 today, the boards would have been full of people scolding him for racing too hard, for peaking too early and predicting doom.
This race is meaningless. Really. Ryan made some money today and didn't tire himself out too much doing so. He still is has as much of a chance to win a medal in London as he did before. If he really is lacking in fitness, he has 12 weeks to get it back and 10's of thousands of miles of base work to start on top of. Hall's best days may be behind him, but this race is no proof of it.
Oh and one more thing: Hall's 2:04 is just as valid as Bill Rodgers' 2:09:55 (which was run under nearly the same conditions), as Rodgers' 2:09:27, heck, as valid as any time ever run at Boston. To those who (archly...) mock the times from 2011: Do you obnoxiously correct anyone who refers to Dick Beardsley as a sub -2:09 marathoner, or to Billy as a sub 2:10? Really? Really!?!
OK.. Just needed to get that off my chest.
30 minutes is totally absurd for a sub 60 and 2:04 (or 2:06) guy. To make this race even worse for Hall he was out kicked by a 40 year old.
In heavy training he should be able to at least run 29 low.

Maybe he wasn't going as hard as he could.
I have to agree. If he wasn't just running through this as a workout, then he should be concerned running that slow in mid May.
When he ran his fast London Marathon he was not that far removed from running a sub 13:20 5k, and it appears that he has neglected that top end speed training.
Even if he can run an evenly paced 2:08-2:09, chances are that will not happen in London when the east Africans throw in those 4:30 miles in the middle of the race.
I really do not understand why he is neglecting the fast training, to be able to at least run a 13:30 5k. Also not training at altitude is very curious as well, as all of his competition is training at 7-8000 feet.
I don't get it?????????????
Perhaps he is still suffering from PF.
Really? That's all I get on mine. Thank you Jenny.

old school guys stayed in shape year round and rarely showed up and ran unless they felt they could compete..when you run races in less that great shape all it does is trivialize racing. Don't pin on a bib number if you haven't prepared. I bet many of the guys Ryan will face do a tempo run with a split like that somewhere in Kenya this weekend.

Link, what a dufus you are! Bill Rodgers IS a sub 2:10 marathoners and Beardsley IS a sub 2:09 marathoner! Your missing a few brain cells!
this result only feeds my fire...our first 10k split at London was 29:34 then I ran 14:09 from 20 to 20K...Ryan does not have a chance to beat the runners from Kenya. We have many young runners who run 30 minutes for 10K in local competition here.
He had nothing to prove.
It's a business and he has to pay the bills
Everyone at NYRR and surrounding them was thrilled to get to shake his hand, wish him well and get a picture.
It's in the NY media which helps build his brand for future endorsements.
When your business is running you can't please everyone. Certainly not the purists on message boards.

Irony, thy name is Duderunner.

I was near the finish line yesterday and Hall looked very relaxed, in fact he seemed to enjoy the run. He was certainly not hurting.
I didn't like this, to me he was disrespecting the race that NYRR was setting up.
Given his current form, injury, and how long away London still is, this seems to me like it was a 10k at HM pace for him. Or in other words - a really good workout.
he's a 2 6 guy, any1 with 1/2 a brain knows that[/quote]
And, apparently you have 1/2 a brain.
There's nothing wrong with a runner making a living. An appearance like that brings publicity to the sport.
He actually ran this 10K @ 2:07ish Marathon Pace...he said he hasn't run anything slower than MP runs in training and that's precisely what he did for the race...
