I took the job of a lifetime a while back. It took a few extra weeks for me to get there, because I had to tie up loose ends where I was, train a replacement, transition stuff over (IT at a place that did not walk me out immediately because nobody there knows anything).
The new place went bankrupt the third week I was there. The doors locked, whole deal. I got a tablet out of the deal, who-pee!
The place I'd left didn't want me back. I'd trained my replacement so well, and they were paying him less than half of what they paid me, so tough luck. It took six months for me to get another job, paying not quite what I'd been making at the first, but the commute makes it even out. Still, I lost out on thousands of dollars in lost wages during the interim, despite the $1200 fairly decent tablet I still have.
As with most things, it's easy to think the missed opportunity would have been the greatest thing ever. The grass is always greener, isn't it?
