Hi, I will be out in Santa Fe for a week in august and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions/info on places to get in some good runs or good trails in the area. I am heading out from Pennsylvania to visit my sister. Looking to get in around 80 miles in during the week, any help is appriciated, thanks -Matthew

There are some great, great, long overdue new dirt trails that opened up on the left hand side of Artist Road (not Bishop's Lodge Road), about 4 miles above Santa Fe, heading toward the ski resort. This is at nearly 8,000 feet and most folks go in the morning. They're rolling, w/ lots of mountain bikers and runners, and nice looking lasses. It is a half-mile down from the 10,000 Waves hot tub and Zen Center if interested, a great place to hang out for the evening after a hard run.
Also go an hour north along Hwy. 84 for the best running in New Mexico at the Ghost Ranch Conference Center, just past the village of Abiquiu between the 224 and 225 mile markers on the Hwy (84). With 21,000 acres of pristine red clay trails along some sweeping mesas, vast landscape, wild skies, juniper and pinon, etc., the place (at 6,500') is just awesome. If you're only doing a run, it's OK to hop or go around the fences, they're mainly to keep the gawking tourists out. I worked there for a couple of years. They filmed "City Slickers" there too.
Best eats in Santa Fe: Diego's, Tomasito's, Guadelupe's, Gabriel's, The Shed (for breakfast). In Espanola, go to El Paragua (#1 in country) or Los Arcos for the best food in the state. Check out Rancho Chimayo in Chimayo for a meal as well as an event.
E-mail me if you want to run with Ron Roybal, ex-CU runner now living in nearby Pojoaque Pueblo. [email protected].
