The idea that anyone who took the lead and pushed the pace for a few laps would have then been stuck there for the next four miles is ridiculous. It's not complicated: go to the front of the pack and lay down a couple of 75s. When you don't want to lead any more, swing out to lane 3 and start jogging. Someone else will take the lead and you can tuck in. Maybe the pace will slow again, but maybe not-- and you may have gotten a couple of people to fall off the back with your surge.
No you would be the person who would be tired the most by your surge. The people who respond to a surge are like a line cars on the interstate in traffic. the farther back you go the less people really move to cover it. You would have just tired yourself out in this situation.
I can't believe you guys don't get this. You say you understand tactical races, but then you say the pace has to be at least so fast.
I think the fact that an 18 min 5k is a pace you all could run is holding you up.
As someone else said. The difference between 5:20s and 6:00 pace is nothing for these guys. It is all slower than their tempo pace. I know dennin and lumbar are doing 8 mile tempos that average out to 5:15 pace.
Since this race was never about a pr, since a lot of these guys have their standard, i'll say it for the 100th time, it doesnt make a difference whether it is a 5:10 jog or a 6 min jog.
