Coworker making me very uncomfortable.

One cannot be "racist" against another.

Just as environmentalists aren't "against" the environment and journalists aren't "against" journals, racists aren't "against" races.

The term for which you are all searching in vain, is "bigoted." It's simple English, really.

Grow up. Every 5 people you are going to work with is going to be like that. If you have a sack then if it bugs you tell them you don't want to hear that stuff. Or do what I do and just don't respond back when they want to get into a topic you are uncomfortable with.

Every body has the right to free speech. Whether you disagree with them or not. I have good friends that are downright racist. My beloved grandmother was the same way until the day she died. Just do your job when you are at work.

Share opposite opinions nicely. Sooner or later he will get the point. Don't socialize outside of work.

Take it to your HR department! It is their job to sort this stuff out amicably.

If it was just a friend, I would say discuss it directly with them. But this is a superior at your work. Different.

If you stab him in the neck with a knife made out of dry ice and nick his carotid arteries , that should do it , with no evidence.

I had the same thing happen. One kid at my work place (he was from Minn) espoused the beliefs that there is a reason black people's neighborhoods are always worse then people of different races but similar incomes. It made me super uncomfortable. I didn't say anything and gave no reactions and tried to change topics when it came up. Im assuming he eventually dug his own grave or will soon but have since stopped working there.

Stand up to him and say that you are offended-and if that means you need to find another job, so be it. Silence is tacit approval. What if he was saying that stuff about you? If he is your supervisor-tell his supervisor. Dude needs to change, or be fired. If the company lets this go on, you don't want to work there. Take if from me-twenty years from now you will look back and be proud of calling him out. If you do nothing-you are a mouse. The world is changed by individuals, one act at a time.

For proper advice you need to provide something more specific. What exactly did he say? My guess it's something not racist at all. There's miserable people like you running around in every workplace looking for racist overtones to find fault with. If this guy was so racist then he would have never given help to some ungrateful fruitcake like yourself in the first place.

You want advice? Try saying thank you once in awhile.

Your co worker from Minnesota is correct. No matter the income, black areas do have more crime then white areas. Its a fact its not a racisit view.

My black buddies wouldnt argue that,yet you honkie pc types get your panties in wad. Having said all that and although I agree with him it is totally out of bounds to bring it up at work. Not the time or the place.

Work is a place for work not social opinions.

Its pretty clear whats happening, he wants you in the all white gang at work. If you dont join you will find yourself alone and without help when the black guys get you alone in the copier room. It does no good to go to the people in charge as they helped create the system and its a way of letting the workers police themselves. There should be plenty of material to make a shank. The first guy that messes with you, shank him. Your problem should go away and the people at work will respect you.

Sounds like you graduated, landed a job and now - reality check ... people have differing views than the PC crap you were fed in college.

I would NOT do this. Even if all the other people in the office think the mentor guy is a tool, you complaining to HR about him makes YOU seem a squeaky wheel. Guess who gets laid off when bad times hit. Squeaky wheels.

There are lots of racist and boorish people in the world. If you complain to HR over every little thing that bothers you, then that says more about you. Let it go. You go to HR when someone touches you inappropriately or makes unwanted advances or some such major thing. Don't do it over this...you will be among the first to go when the time comes if you do.

I recommend you just outlast his ability to be your mentor so that you don't have to deal with him much anymore.

Slip a rufie in his coffee. Then make snide comments to other co-workers that he is drunk again. He'll be gone in no time.
