Tyler Pennel of Western? He was second in xc to his teammate Ryan Heabe (who ran an 8:41 steeple as a rsFR last yr). Pennel ran 13:55 or so as a SO, but has had a few major injuries since that have kept him from making a bigger name for himself. Also has more 2nd place finishes at nationals than anybody i know. Just a 9:50 kid from HS in colorado.
Still, as much as I love the kid, Ritz was just sitting and kicking. Had ritz cared about time, it wouldnt have been close.
He mentioned in his blog beforehand that his goal wasn't to run super fast. He did what he needed to do to win, so I don't think anyone can say something is wrong based on this race.
