Which major? Oregon could easily be the better choice depending on the specific academic major and if she wants to be a pro runner.

Who says she doesn't have speed? Up to this year it looks like the 800/1500 were her strongest events.
She put on a good show in the one mile she ran indoors at New Balance, only a week before USA XC. After all that distance training, she was beaten only by Haley Pierce and ran 4:51 off a slow start. Said that she hadn't done any speed but could've maintained that pace much longer and regretted not going out hard from the gun.
I can see her running 4:40, but crushing it in the 2 mile and 5000.

Where did you hear that? There's plenty of research that shows that converting fibers is very possible and easy.
No, you can alter the type IIa fibers somewhat, but not entirely. But, if she has already done extensive distance training to date, then her type IIa are endurance fibers now and she ain't going back.
Why wouldnt she be able to go back from endurance fibers? I read that all fibers are interchangeable. They are a function of training. Where are you getting your information?
Only type 2A or B are convertible, but if you do ultra training, you can change the entire makup of your fast twitch fibers, and only to a certain extent. There is so much muscle breakdown involved in ultra training.
But I don't think maurice greene will ever be an elite marathoner, or sammy wanjiru run a 10 second 400 meters, no matter the training.

Type 1 has been shown to be converted to the type 2s. And vice versa. Where are you getting your information? Where did you hear of a limit of extent?
It seems like common sense partly. I only read somewhere, on the web of course, that ultramarathon training is the only way to convert type 2A and B to type 1 fibers.
I neve read about type 1's being converted to type 2's. I thought only the convertible fibers can be interchanged.
Thread Pirates, take your twitch banter elsewhere
She also looks very healthy and like she has successfully navigated her development. Strong, lean, muscular runner. Excited to see what the future brings!

After a slow start? What? She took the race out hard alone, was ahead by a good 50m at one point early on, then she slowed and the front group caught her. She was strong enough to hang on for 2nd once the kicking started.

I was at the race as well. I'll post a link to a video if you want to watch. Very, very impressive run for a young lady. As mentioned above, this was a mixed race and she was able to tuck into a pack of guys running ~33' pace. Still, very impressive, especially for a HSer.

Awesome. Thanks very much.
Why does this girl not run high school?

The school she attends is an independent school (not part of their state's association), and so it isn't part of the normal state/New England series, and also most meets wouldn't let her team participate in the same meet as association schools (e.g. the Independent Schools meet as part of the Great American Festival). She has competed for them in the past, holding class records in the frosh 800, 1500 and 3k. Sounds like injuries kept her from setting the other class records. If she is competing for them again this year I'm sure she'll set all the school records 800-3k that she wants. And it would be nice to see her against other nationally elite HS runners at NBON! Could you imagine Finn, Pierce, and Hatton in the 5k? Sounds like the makings of a great race to me...
She goes to the prep school Pappy Bush, George W, and Jeb all attended.
As for her college choice, anyone who can get into Stanford would be silly to go to Oregon.
Uncle Phil's potential pro contract, history, track culture could be one. Academically no question, Stanford wins. But for someone who's top priority is running over the classroom Oregon is always a top choice.
She never ran very competitively until this year, so it doesn't seem like running was a priority when she made her college choice. And as everyone already pointed out, Cayla Hatton attends Phillips Andover, just about the snobbiest secondary school in the country. I doubt her parents paid ~$45k per year for high school so the kid could go to Oregon (Nova, Georgetown, etc.).
Congrats for her accomplishments. The all-time lists are probably not representative of U.S. prep talent for the 10k because high schoolers rarely (if ever) run that distance.
I would like to know what sports she did before she started running full time. Soccer?
In the Q&A linked to on the homepage she says, "I started off with Gino Caro when I was in fifth grade (I think). I was running the Hershey Meets at the time, and he worked on speed and drills with me a few times a week."
Also, "I was ready to give up after a year of injury (last year). A hip specialist in Boston told me I probably wouldn’t be able to run competitively again, but Peg (her PT) would have none of that."
So she has been runnning since 5th grade and has trained hard enough to get a significant injury. Sounds to me like she's been very involved in running for quite some time. Still an awesome time though.
I think athletes like this should prove to the "there's no such thing as talent" crowd to STFU.
Sometimes it's not about training yourself into the ground, some athletes are just touched by god.
Awesome. One of the best races I've seen in a long time.
