He was coaching when I was running. In Melbourne in the 70's.

You'd probably know old Perc (Percy Cerutty) didn't think much of him.
Doesn't look like the goal will be reached.

Yes, but Perc didn't think very highly of any of his peers. Franz was out there, but he did make a major contribution to sport in Australia and was revered by his athletes in Victoria. Does anybody remember which US athletes he coached?

Percy apparently was a prick. But I never 'knew" Percy, except the percy I pointed at the porcelain. On the other Hand Franz was still coaching. PC died in 1975. He was and old man when he was grinding Herb Elliot into gold dust in 1960.
...and I'd venture to say that there were quite a few that didn't think much of old Perc'...
Interesting read:

Also:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Cerutty which includes "Cerutty maintained a great rivalry with fellow-coach Franz Stampfl whose Interval Training techniques were disliked by Cerutty."

Stampfl did not coach Bannister, and Bannister doesn't state that he did.
Chataway and the others were inspired by Emil Zatopek in 1952.

Roger Bannister interview:
http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/ban0int-7Stampfl overtrained his athletes. So it was lucky Doubell injured his achilles and couldn't train leading up to his OG Gold.
In the book positive by werner reiterer it seems to imply that Franz gave his athletes steroids.
Perc and stampfl.....2 great coaches, 1 great era. Miss the old days
According to Chataway, Stampfl was there. Call it "coaching" or something else.
By January 1954 Bannister, Brasher and I were joining Stampfl at the track by the Duke of York's Barracks in the King's Road, in Chelsea, on two or three evenings a week.

Probably agree.
A bit like current swim coaches who flog their athletes then 'taper' at an event.
And High School coaches who seem to think more is better.

So would it be more accurate for "the fools on this site" to say Roger Bannister wasn't coached by Franz Stampfl but knew him and was aware of his interval based training philosophy and he (Bannister) followed a similar training method? If so, it also begs the question who's the fool on this site? And another, what is it "the fools on this site could learn"?

I never thought so until I read his book 'Why Die?'. Then realized that all he did was to promote Perc all of the time. Really, Perc wasn't worthy of carrying Franz and Arthur's shoes.
All of the coaches in the 70s hated each other. Lydiard hated Cerutty, Cerutty hated Stampfl, and so on. Is it really that different today? Maybe Salazar wouldn't admit to it on the record, but I bet he's no fan of Schumacher. Just like an athlete has to be a bit cocky about his or her ability going into a race, a coach has to be a bit cocky that his or her methods are better than everyone else's.

Lydiard revered Cerutty, and in fact got much of his training from him, adapted to NZ conditions.
Cerutty didn't have anything to do with Stampfl but probably thought he was stupid. Stampfl on the other hand, kicked Elliott off the training grounds when he was going to school there! After that, Elliott delighted in kicking Hewson's butt in the 880 the last two times they raced.
Lydiard admired Cerutty and believed in much of what Perc did as a coach. Perc could not tolerate Stampfl and the Lincoln Elliott races were that hate personified.
