Actually, I have been lead to believe that teachers can actually pull down some decent salaries. Maybe it differs by local.
I think the ones that get cut out are the adjunct faculty at college level.
Late career teachers in my school district make over $100,000 per year, and if they put in the typical amount that teachers do, they will ALL have VERY good retirements. That doesn't make them top earners, but there are lots of professional people who don't do as well.

The issue with only making $100,000 per year late in your career is that you weren't successful enough to make $100,000 early in your career.
I don't know how households with children get by making less than $200,000.
