Preach on. Army was 6th at NCAAs that year! The TOP IC4A school! The 1993 Army team would have made a mockery of the HEPS XC bunch had they not left for the Pathetic, I mean Patriot League. The Army guys bent over the rest of HEPS indoors that year. Ask Wilbur, Class, Fitzpatrick, Slicko, Lear, etc how their self-asteem felt on the way home after that cold Harvard weekend.
Army hasn't been the same since they left HEPS...and HEPS hasn't been the same either. Army now stinks it up in the Patriot League having spent half a decade playing down to the competition.
I ran at Navy at the time but we share a common bond with the Army guys. Besides, our XC team rocked the house the year before when we finished 7th.

for devils advocate, Army hadn't won an outdoor track title for about 25 years
Outdoor Track Heps Titles since 1935 (last championship)
Pennsylvania 14 (2002)
Princeton 14 (2000)
Yale 13 (1968)
Harvard 10 (1983)
Army 7 (1967)
Cornell 6 (1985)
Navy 4 (1993)
Dartmouth 1 (1988)
Brown & Columbia . . . 0 -
Granted. I was only referring to XC.

this also dawned on me as I was walking home from work -- sorry. Army has consistently had a potent XC team.

Thanks for the info Bill!
I always considered Brown a quasi-Ivy, like Penn and the Cornell School of Hotel Management.
That should rile up the post-ers.

That's funny, Schoplifter. One, two, three. You just named the three Ivies that accepted me! -
Teddy Fitzpatrick and Not 2 time winner Doug Hardin 24:35
or Keith Coburn 1 win /National Champ 1000yds, Puhlease
Must be a Hanover view of the Heps -
Excuse me schoplifter?
didnt start the clock until 4 seconds after the race started? let me guess, you were an official time at the race. as for not doing much, it was called being injured. whoever you are, dont hide behide a name when you take shots at someones credibility mmmkkay?

P.S.to my last post, If you have the opporuntiy to speak
with Frank Haggerty(Harvard) or Mark Young (Yale) Ask them
about their teams circa 1966-68. As a kid it was front page
sports news. Also, as stated prior the course has been
improved Merrick ran 24:15 when the record was 24:04 by
Arthur D (HC) I beleive the record now is 23:48 by Bevier
and Schille's time isn't under 24:00. the NCAA's were
there in 70 0r 71 and Dulong record withstood that onslaught. That Late 60's Harvard distance group was a
national contender. -
Any thoughts from the "old course" guys?
-
My memory is a little better. They ran six miles at that NCAA not five. Merrick ran 23:51 which stood the test (I believe Alitz missed by a second or two) until Bevier ran 23:49. Not really sure what the "improvements" really did to change the horse trails on the back loop. Cemetary hill is still WAY over-rated, by the way.

Malmo,
I got rejected at Brown, so you are one up on me. I made them pay for it though.... -

Sorry Robocop. I meant no ill will. Your 3:42 is faster than I ever ran. It just seemed suspect in comparision with Kieth Yuens 3:40 that he musta sold his soul the Lucifer for. But Im not seriously calling it into question.
This proves my private theory that 90% of national caliber runners over the last ten years are either reading these message boards daily, or at least in contact with a buddy who tells them when their name comes up!!!

Eric Carter tied Merrick's record. Bevier's run was not as a collegian.
The back hills are smoother now. Much more of a paved course than just a path in the forest as it formerly was. The sand in the cowpath is now gone also. -
Schoplifter: Heh heh. There was about a zero point zero chance that I'd be rejected by Brown as super-alum Rothenberg used to round-up all of the DC area kids for a road trip to Providence. Made my deposit at Penn and had a roommate assigned to me until Harry Groves came through with some $$$$ after winning State. Didn't qualify for aid, so starting off life deeply in debt wasn't my idea of an education. I made the right choice.
ru4real: Carter tied Merricks record? All-freakin-right! -
Sure! Carter he is Penn States all time best.

yuens problem was getting a job. that's the problem for most especially if they cant get any help from a sponsor. in my opinion, the only thing that prevents a top college guy from making it is money.
as for selling his soul, if he was in it at the bell, he was tough as hell. he beat a lot of good guys that day- sherry, ronnie harris, bob lesko... -
In no particular order...
1.)Wejo
2.)Rojo
3.)Slicko
4.)Lear -
let me clarify...
1.) Wejo...has brought running sensationalism to the forefront of American mainstream media.
2.) Rojo...Even though he did not race in college,
he may be responsible for some very well
known performances...in the past and the future.
3.) Slicko...the story about him having to give up
the T-shirt to Fitzpatrick at Heps is legendary.
4.) Lear..."Running with the Buff's...
ABSOLUTELY a NY Times bestseller. -
VCP has changed several times throughout its storied history. the state grooms the course, i think, whenever the NY state meets are there. during my HS career in the early to mid 90's the course was terrible. the boulders had been uncovered and the course was once again rough. they fixed it up in the fall of 1996. there have been other times like this...1981, i think...
-
3.) Slicko...the story about him having to give up
the T-shirt to Fitzpatrick at Heps is legendary.
He gave up the Slicko shirt to Sam Wilbur for losing to him in the Heps 5000.
