Horrific Dartmouth Hazing??

Here is a novel idea: don't join the f-ing frat. What an idiot.

I think the saddest part about all of that is that some kids are so desperate to be a part of that culture they perceive as cool that they are willing to put up with that sort of thing. If someone had tried to get me to do any one of those things I would have walked off. If they tried to force me, give em a Belfast Kiss and walk off.

Forced ? The U.S Constitution guarantees due process. Civilians can quit a job or process at any time. Firemen, corrections, police, CIA agents regularly resign on the spot if they don't like the circumstances. You can refuse to be hazed and quit. The Pentagon's service academies allow you to quit college and leave school at any time. The U.S. has a Bill of Rights so even the US NV/AR/CG/AF allow you to quit any training on a moments notice and step down to another qualification level.

Nope, hazing is illegal in 44 states including New Hampshire. It doesn't matter whether you have the option to quit.

This is my alma mater, decades ago. I was hoping at the time we'd put the frats out of business and it looked like a distinct possibility. But it never happened, alas.

C'mon, I can't be the only one who was at least a little bit turned on by this story?

I had friends who swore to disown me if I joined a frat when I joked about it. I was joking about it because the Pike frat had just been allowed back on campus after a long banishment due to serial date rape and other indiscretions.

Frats suck.

I think this also an indictment of the Dartmouth social culture. It's a privileged good old boy's club for the children of the rich and powerful who weren't smart enough to get into Harvard/Princeton/Yale.

I went to Dartmouth and went through a 'hell night' initiation at a frat. I don't even remember what I had to do, but it was nothing embarrassing or humiliating. Pretty good natured actually.

But, I felt like my people were the jocks and artists rather than tv sports fans and drinkers, so I quit the next day.

Like every college, there are many subcultures at Dartmouth. It is fabulous for the outdoors. For the smallest college in the Ivies it provides a full slate of sports. near total focus on undergrads, unlike other Ivies. In fact, it is consistently ranked the top college in the country for 'undergraduate teaching.' Which, when you think about it, should be the most important thing.

as for culture...like any very expensive place, there is among some a bad, priviledged attitude. But something like 1 of 3 of each class is a student who is the first of his family to go to college, and that is a great fact.

It may be illegal, as it should, but a person is still a full blown idiot for allowing himself to be 'forced' into this type of treatment. Frats would quit doing this shit if people refused to play along.

Sure they are. They're forced by the millions of people who would gladly take their spot to have a chance to chum up with a ton of Dartmouth graduates, work at the CIA, Pentagon, any job. Just because people are willing to go through bullsh*t like this to make a buck, survive, and provide for their families doesn't make it ok for someone to fvck with them like this.

Tell me, how exactly was this person "forced" to do those things? Why should I care? I have no sympathy for stupid, weak people, especially frat boys.

It's insular even by the standard of private universities, the Greek system dominates the social scene, the rate of sexual assaults is very high even compared to other colleges. It's quite expensive but the financial aid is very good owing to the large endowment. It's really cold in Hanover in the winter.

This is the exact image I had of fraternities going into college. I had no intention of joining one at all.

I ended up in a fraternity. Many friends I had already made were in the same fraternity, and I was honestly surprised that they would be, considering their personality types. They didn't fit into the mold I had in my mind. Turns out, this fraternity was completely different than anything I thought I knew. I was never hazed in any way. I was offered alcohol, but turned it down because of training or meets or just my lack of interest in it at the time. I was never forced to drink anything. I was never even pressured to drink. I never had eggs thrown at me (saw other frats do it though), I never had to streak anywhere naked (saw other frats do it though), I was never publicly humiliated.

as if sororities dont do the same types of stuff. ive heard just as many horror stories from them. i just dont get the point of frats/sororities. putting yourself through hell and paying money just to have friends that you will probably end up hating anyway? why not just make friends the normal way?

Dude. Think of it like a running club. Why pay to join a running club? You can enter races and run on your own, right?
