Some nice points. There are issues here that make you think. The mid-majors were the option these kids chose likely because they weren't heavily recruited as high schoolers. Oklahoma never recruited them, well maybe as a walk on at best.
There should be lost year of eligibility after a transfer. Learn to live with the consequences of your decisions.
so these guys... Riley and Patrick... They come out of high school with good not great pr's.... When they get good, they aren't allowed to chase their dreams at big D1 programs? Put yourself in their position... I'm sure as kids they dreamed of going big, running for a big name school, making their small communities proud (just my guess, I'm from a small town) when they finally become talented enough to earn scholarships to a big school like Oklahoma, lets run and others pick them a part for what?? Following their dreams? Ya I get they bailed on their teammates.. but put yourself in their position... you only live once, how many opportunities do you get to run at a serious program... these guys graduate from high school with limited options... then they get good, who's to say they can't run for a big school... Call them what you want, I support them!!! They are a inspiration to all small town guys with mediocre prs! Dream big!

Huh?
student-athletes receive their scholarship before the start of each semester, in advance of any performances.
they are also protected for having scholarships removed due to performance during the period of their award.
so to proclaim the system is unfair does not take into account the many protections they system offers the student-athlete.
football and basketbal
football and basektball have it right, just don't have the "exception" at all unless you transfer "down" to a lower division.
here you have 2 distance kids who appear to be able to transfer with no penalty, yet there is a spinter who left Tennessee trying to go to FSU who has to sit becuase he wasn't granted the exception.
Tennessee is just enforcing a rule, but they will be seen as the bad guys.
The NCAA isn't divided into a group of minor leage teams that serve as a farm system for the better teams in the same division.
With the amount of programs that get cut each year, I can't believe more people aren't supporting rules that would help keep talented athletes at these smaller schools. As an administrator, if you see that the team isn't performing well, and the athletes that are successful all transfer out to other programs, why would you want to continue sinking money into that program.
So Kyle, I take it that you intend to work your entire life for the first person who hires you when you graduate?
I think that if you took the time to read Pat Casey's comments on this, you would see that he is very grateful for all that MSU and Kennedy did for him. But you can't lock people in if they would prefer to move ... it's athletics, not jail. There is nothing immoral about deciding that you would rather go to a different college after a couple of years.

You're just changing the subject. What you said is not true. Coaches may not get performance bonuses, but they still get paid their salary upfront no matter how badly they or their athletes do. If they have multiyear contracts and get fired, then they still get paid even if they're doing nothing.
Good luck to Patrick! Thanks for putting MSU on the front page of LETSRUN with your amazing sub 4 IN Bozeman!
All this talk of sitting out a year and punishment is ridiculous. Isn't leaving the most beautiful town in America punishment enough? If you really want to torture the guy make him spend 1 year as a Griz.

Completely agree. You can't fault the guy for wanting to pursue his dreams, get more consistent competition and better training partners. Whether it's Riley Masters or Pat Casey, it has to be hard to leave a place where you've made tons of friends, taken great classes and had tremendous running success. It's a risk, but one both wanted to make. Good luck to Casey at OU!

Yeah, Montana State is terrible, taking a 4:24 guy to sub-4

One year as a Griz... harsh!
I have to apologize for that one- had MSU conflated with a nearby program of dubious repute...they obviously have a good thing going out there.

"In conclusion, this is the NCAA. It is designed for student athletes to get an education at the university of their choosing, not multiple universities. "
Let me rewrite this for you:
In conclusion, this is the free market system and has nothing to do with being an indentured servant (aka ncaa student athlete). All students are free to pursue an education at any university of their choosing, including transferring from one university to another for a better fit.
