A buddy of mine (he's now 48) says he used to run a 4 flat 40yd dash. He also says he can still hit a 95mph fastball. If he could run 4 flat, I'd think he would still have some sort of running form...but he doesn't.
At region I had a teammate who made the claim that it doesn't take strength to hit a home run in the MLB, just good hand eye coordination. I argued w/ him for about 10 minutes and then gave up.
A co-worker of my wife, ran the 1997 Chicago Marathon in 4:42. After returning to work, he said, "That Khannouchi guy won nearly $500,000 for his race. That much money makes me want to take a year off work and just train."
We were interviewing someone for a job recently who is very involved in the local crossfit. I threw a few playful comments his way about some crossfit guys seem to think doing the crossfit workouts was better training for long distance running than running itself. He then preceded to tell me about a world class runner that works out with them who is now 60 and ran the marathon in 1:45 a few months ago. Which was a age group record. Who knew!
A college guy I knew was a 6-7min miler with about 40mpw training. He truly believed that he could be the WR holder for 5K "...all I need to do is train properly for it..."

that's the general idea isn't it???
It's OK to look a nun over, but don't get in the habit.
"those Kenyans have such long legs that's why they're so fast"
He told me he was the national spelling bee champion.

Had a girl tell me she would run but she was too short to be any good. When I pointed out that Geb and Bekele, both world record holders are both under 5'3" she just said "Yeah but they're Kenyans (oops) so it's different for them".
We were preparing to do the classic PE mile for the first time this quarter, and I was overhearing some fellow students talking about how they we're going to run it.
"Man dude, I think I'm gonna go for the world record."
Shortly after the mile run, some other dude was impressed by my mediocre time and asked:
"Isn't the world record 5:30?"
I do understand track is not a popular sport, but I do wish some people would take care of their ignorance and at least understand what professional times look like and the effort required to run said time.
While I was at Long Beach State a douche from the men's volleyball team argued with me for 30 min at a party about how he triple jumped 53 feet in school but quit after two meets because it was lame. Also my anatomy lab instructor who was a 5'5" Korean grad student tried to convince me he could run a 45 second 400 and was shocked that our best guy could only run low 46's. I am old now and don't care when people tell stories but back then I would get pissed because I was working my ass off trying to hit marks an would never lie about a pr and these clowns would claim much better marks than I could ever hope for.

I totally understand. Off the top of your head, do you know how fast a top hockey player can hit the puck? Or the average number of yards a quarterback runs the ball? or how long a soccer player should be able to bounce the ball without it touching the ground?
Cricket is not a popular sport in the USA. It's practically unheard of. Do you know how many wickets are behind a batter? What does the bowler do? I wish you Americans would take care of your ignorance and at least make an effort to understand it.
Co-worker told me he was in line to be on the 4x200 team for the olympics, but the boycott happened that year and he never got the chance. Bummer.
One wicket comprising of three stumps and two bails. But that, like times in athletics, is a key part of the sport, the number of keepie ups a soccer player can do, or how a hockey player can hit the ball is not the main objective of either sport, and isnt nearly as important.
I wouldnt know many metres a good rugby league forward would gain in a match, but I at least understand the scoring system.
A certain Donegal GAA player is claimed to have run 20.4 seconds for 200 metres on grass in a pair of football boots in a recent GAA annual year book. Mark McHugh take a bow son, you are ready by the sounds of it to take down Bolt and Blake.
ive got a few..
After running my first sub 7 60m in High school, a P.E teacher at my high school told me that i was "almost as fast as he was" when he was in school, finally got it out that he ran a 6.5 in the 60m. No, he was not Casey Combest, he was some fat clown, guy just picked an arbitrary number that in his mind was "marginally" faster and stuck with it.. Couldn't even use blocks
For you distance guys, while at work, i overheard a man that was running at a local long relay tell his buddy that he was looking to go out and run "under 28 minutes" for 12k. Guy was a 5'4 Korean fella.
Heard everything from 10m Long Jumps to Sub 4 Miles to Sub ten one hundreds. My all time favorites gotta be the kid who told me he used to run the 100m in under ten , but then he got struck by lightning and hasn't been able to run anything close since.
A guy at work in his late 50s claimed that back when he was in the Marine Corps, he and a couple of buddies used to take their ONE HOUR lunch break and run 20 miles every day of the work week. Then they'd do a long run on the weekends.
My uncle told me at christmas that a kid on his sons 5th grade basketball team was also a very impressive runner, he had run 7:30 for the 2 mile
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
