How can Neely possibly know that this is what she wants out of life if this is all she has ever known? That was the main thing I was trying to point out...and the notion of majoring in communication (really?) from a second rate school.
There is nothing wrong with doing what you love and following your dreams, but some things about the girl's scenario are sick.
First of all, about your grad school stipend, no you don't.
If this weren't letsrun, I would find it weird that an immature little judgemental hipster would call someone who is moving on at a rate far ahead of 90% of her peers "immature." But the pot calling the stop sign black is par for the course here.
Why do you care where or with whom she's lived? She's had a really successful running career and if she's been happy living near home why should she have left? And if the sort of snobbery you're exhibiting comes from going to a "first rate" school I'd rather go to something less impressive.

all the poster is pointing out is the truth. a young adult who has been groomed to run her whole life. her parents/or dad have done the same thing with all the other kids but she has been the most succesful so far. in his interview it is true when spence says that they have to want to run because there is no way anyone could "make" a person train the way she has unless there was some sort of internal drive there. on the positive side at least she isn't giving interviews where she is smacking on f-ing gum the whole time like her hs interviews. damn were those annoying.
Saying "something about the girl's scenario is sick" is not just pointing out the truth. He's making a judgement and levelling criticism.

Don't let facts get in the way of the story people have created in their heads about Neely's life.
Don't count Neely out.her Dad has coached her for years and i am sure they know when to go for glory and follow your Dream.
They are both real nice people and are go getter's.
Hey fool~I can tell from your writing style that you are far from ivy-quality material. As you can tell from my writing style of writing I don't give a crap about elitism. FYI-I graduated from Shippensburg University and then went on to receive my Ph.D. from a University ranked in the top 20 of the Times of Higher Education. And, I received an internal award equivalant in value to a Fullbright--so suck on that. Even if you received a Rhodes or Fullbright, your stipend would not be more than a professional runner's salary; sorry you are a liar. You're probably someone who is either a trust fund baby or one who is in up to their eyeballs in debt from an over-priced undergraduate education from a faux-ivy (e.g., Bucknell), right? You probably don't have much life experience and you're trying to compensate with your education, right? You probably haven't done anything worth mentioning in life and are jealous, right? If you ever actually grow up you'll learn that you can't make yourself look big by making other people look small. And the main value of an education is to improve the greater good--not to promote hegemony...oh, but that's a leason I learned at Shippensburg, perhaps they don't teach that leason at faux-ivys

Very well said.
A 12/27/11 interview. Spence gives some detail as to her thought process in deciding to turn pro. She spoke with several top American women runners (Simpson, Goucher, Drossin) asking for advice.

Yep. Sounding more immature all the time. It's probably best this board is anonymous because I would be seriously tempted to go Jay and Silent Bob on this Central Pa crackpot.
Just heard she is signing a contract in the 150-200k range with Nike
i am telling you get hershey on board. "sweetest place sponsors the 'sweetest face'" that kind of crap could be advertised nationally. sure go to nike for the gear but go to hershey for some additional endorsement-sponsorship dough. they could use some good, solid press over the next few years and she more than likely can hand them that. she could get involved with the Milton Hershey school and have some workouts with the kids, etc,.... right up her ally since she wants to work with kids.
It's Fulbright, not Fullbright. I make about $32k with my grad school stipend in addition to a free education, which was earned via a Department of Defense NDSEG fellowship. My writing is poor because I am on a Blackberry while waiting for the commuter rail. My stipend was used to illustrate that most pro runners make on the order of $15k in their first year. Whoever said $150-200k has got to be kidding because this is in the 85-95 percentile for the U.S.
I concede that I am making a judgment, rather than an objective statement. That is pretty obvious. Neely's progression to pro athlete is logical and she seems happy. Maybe discussion should be left at that, but it really is hard not to talk about how weird the situation is...never going to school (homeschool and communications at Ship don't count) and being taught/mentored/coached only by the parents. To whoever said she is "beyond her years"...being engaged at 21 (22?) seems immature if anything and one can hardly call running a real job.
So maybe I am just a pot-smoking hipster or an elitist stuck in my ivory tower in academia, but at least I will have gone out an experienced the world. Growing up in a running cult, you never will have had that chance. Good job Steve Spence on living vicariously through your daughter or just cloning yourself.
...at least I'll get a job that contributes to others and greater society, not one that is a self indulgent quest for personal athletic fame/success.
Blah. But I do really like Central Pennsylvania, despite the Spence-occupancy.
I think it's even harder not to talk about your weird obsession with her situation. You really have a distorted and cynical view of everything as well. Why is that?
Being enrolled as a student at a university isn't "going to school"? Getting engaged at 21/22 is necessarily immature? How so? (I would say that you can't even begin to make that judgment without knowing anything specific about the relationship.) What qualifies as "experiencing the world", and not being close to the Spence family how do you begin to make that judgment? Steve is trying to live vicariously through his daughter? He's a high school state champ, a division II national champ, a world champs marathon bronze medalist, and an Olympian.
Your personal grudge really comes through in your last point. Since you have such high disdain for professional athletes, can I assume that you don't follow professional running (or any other pro sport for that matter)?

I promise that no one at Bucknell is concerned with Shippensburg, Neely Spence, or her life. Thanks for the potshot though, and have a good New Year's!
ad hominem logical fallacy. next.

Please. If that's the case its probably along the lines of 15-25k a year max and the remainder is travel expenses, performance bonuses and equipment.
With Neely's titles, times, and name she will get somewhere close to 40 or 50k a year. I would take it in a heartbeat.
Heck I would be most college grads these days would take that as well.
Good luck.
The jealousy on this site amazes me at times. Neely could probably beat over 90% of the guys on this site. (me included)
You are way off on that assumption. She has had more then one offer over 100k and Nike is leading the way.
