5K: Fleshman, Huddle are likely qualifiers. Third spot open to many including Spence and Hasay.
10K: Rhines, Koll (now married), Yoder-Begley likely qualifiers. Hard group to break up. Many darkhorses including those who do not qualify for the marathon.
Marathon: Flanagan, Goucher, Davila likely qualifiers. Again, hard group to break up.
Spence in the 5k seems her best choice and, I believe, her best event.

I don't disagree with you, other than saying that it is perhaps her better event for the moment. Nothing to say that she can't move up successfully as she gets better prepared for the longer races. But that is down the line, not this year. I haven't looked at the trials schedule, but I presume that a 5k/10k double is possible.
Mistake , there are better agents in the mix.
This leads to the question of what ever happened to Neely's main competition in her dvision: Jessica Pixler. I really thought she would come on strong and be in the mix for the Olympics.
Last I heard she was doing graduate work at Colorado and had a season left for the Bufs.
Anyone know anything.
I think Pixler ran a solid 5k (15:25?)early last Spring before getting injured.
Don't recall them time but I remember who beating some solid ladies. Like - real solid. I think that might have been the same race Neely ran quick. If Pixler is healthy I think she is way dangerous.

be coaching at Shippensburg also. I was surprised to hear this considering the additional time comittment of someone who is going professional and still in school at the same time. What is she thinking!?!
Although I am not close the the situation, I imagine that Neely's coaching duties will be as a volunteer asst, an arrangement which can entail no coaching but allows access to facilities, training partners on the team, etc.
I don't think her dad will have her standing on the infield with a clipboard and stopwatch all spring.
I'm surprised more athletes don't take advantage of this loophole. Many expenses of a professional athlete are training related. If I'm understanding this correctly, Spence is using her dad and the university to take care of these costs. I'm assuming she will travel and compete at a few meets with them also (as workouts). It's basically like a double sponsorship with the university and whoever she signs with. It's a practically brilliant scheme. Is it ethical / legal?

This is correct.
I wish her well. The OP probably never followed his dreams. Even if she does not make the Oly team; at least she tried her best.
I agree. Neely wants to be a professional runner. She is now ready to join the professional ranks. What is one more indoor and outdoor D2 collegiate season going to do for her? She would have turned pro in June 2012 anyway. She can now focus on her training and pick the races that are best for her. Go Neely!
She probably has no chance in the 5k with Huddle, Fleshman, Hastings, Bizarri, Rhines, etc. Although a lot of the solid 10k runners may end up in the marathon. Uhl(koll) is the only true favorite in the 10k. We may very well see a battle for the 3rd spot between Hasay and Spence if they both stay healthy.
I wouldn't leave out Amy Hastings. Made the team in the 5k last year and doing marathon training. Watch out for her in the 10k.

Thanks mom!!
You're welcome! Go get 'em kid!
It'll be interesting to see where see ends up after 2012. Does she continue to be coached by her dad or go elsewhere? She has spent the past couple of summers training in Colorado in and near Boulder.
She has yet to run a 10k on the track or if she has its not listed. Lots of 10k experienced women to contend with.
15th best time this year by an american , 5K track.
Marathoners will probably all run the 10k at the trials.
Given her x-country strength , 10k may be her best event over the long haul , 2012 trials a good learning experience for her.
We wish her luck !
Someone made a post asking if she could make the olympic team about a month ago

Additionally Lisa Koll, Amy Begley, and Shannon Rowbury all ran 15 flat or faster in 2010. There are about 20 American women with faster 5k PRs

your approach to answering the question indicates you don't know much about neely. one's season best or PR doesn't put one on the team. one needs to race.
her odds of making the team are debatable, sure, but they're much worse if she runs indoor/outdoor D2 track seasons. she has nothing left to prove at that level. i would not bet against her making the final(s). i would not bet against her being ready when it matters.
Good for her, as she is one of the next wave a young runners who will have success at the international level.
I see Emily Sisson as another runner with big potential.
Of course there is Hasay as well, if she runs the 5000m, which may be better suited for her than the 1500m.
