Yeah, JUST imagine a 42-foot tall instrument of torture used by the Ancient Romans in order to line their roads with the bodies of criminals in every stage of death and decomposition as a warning to potential wrongdoers- in a 240 year-old democracy that rejected "Cruel and Unusual Punishment" in its founding document!
That said, obviously the cross is a symbol of Christianity as the instrument of Jesus' execution, but what does it really have to do with Christmas, which celebrates his birth? Also, the Hanukah menorah isn't the SYMBOL of the Jewish religion as a whole, but a symbol of Hanukah, and thus is more analogous to a Christmas tree than a Cross, and the White house is filled with those like it's a department store. A better analogy to the Cross as a symbol of the religion as a whole would perhaps be the Star of David, and I haven't seen any of those lately on the White House Lawn.
In any case, I think most of you are hypocrites, because as much as you object to the Menorah's presence on land ADJACENT to the White House's Grounds, (and presumably just for the eight days of Hanukah), if there actually was a 42-foot cross ON the White House Lawn, and for the whole year round, you'd think we were finally getting somewhere.
Constitutionally speaking, by the spirit of the 1st Amendment, which states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" etc, neither should be there under its guiding principle of separation of church and state. Then again, by the letter rather than the spirit, Congress as far as I know has nothing to do with this matter. But then AGAIN, further down the list of Amendments is the one guaranteeing all Americans equal protection under the law, and since it's Federal land, if you erect one religion's holiday decoration, you should erect them all when appropriate. This is, more or less, what they do, (at least on Federal property- towns and cities all across the country erect Christmas decorations overwhelmingly compared to others.)
So what's wrong with doing that? Isn't Christmas about being welcoming and hospitable and generous and loving and inclusive- and er, MERRY?

Why are you going to the trouble to register usernames to reply with crass nonsense to years-old threads all over LRC? Do you feel tough insulting people who probably don't even come here anymore? lol.
