Gentleman, gentleman, gentleman… let's play nice…..
All an athlete needs to ask when choosing a school is: is this a school that I would go to if I WASN"T in sports? If I am an athlete will the program give me full opportunity to be good, meaning training facilities and competition (meets) and technical resources, one of those resources is a coach. The coach is actually the last on the "list" but should be treated lightly because they may be the only ones in the program that can assure you have the proper "opportunity. That said, at the college level the athlete, given the opportunity should be held responsible for their own progress, sometimes "in spite" of the coach.
We have to many athletes going to colleges and not improving.. this shouldn't happen. The athlete should not accept poor coaching and "no" improvement. How do you do that? Learn the event yourself.. and "learn" it not just what a world class athlete or coach says but "why". The athlete has the responsibility to themselves to challenge the coach to coach.
As far as transferring, first why? Better opportunity? If not stay where you are and improve.
About coaching… since the early 90's we have had a "plethora" of "one event" coaches! Why I'm not sure.. maybe because of "coaching education" or the certification process, if so it has created a result that is unacceptable for our sport.
Why?
In the 60's, 70's and 80's a "coach" coached everything. John Smith, Tom Tellez, Brooks Johnson, Loren Seagrave, Dan Pafaf, Vince Anderson, Bill Webb, and on and on, they were not, are not "one event coaches".
If you can coach you can coach every event! Every event period. The only "coach" that I have ever thought should "specialize" is a distance coach and even they should know enough about physiology, speed, strength, bio-mechanics and physics to coach other events simply by studying the technique and movement.
A "coach" is what should be hired and trained properly for the NCAA jobs that come available. But I think the head coaches are not secure enough or will not hire someone that may "threaten" their own coaching ability. If they were secure, like a Bob Braman, Pat Henry etc.. they will hire the coaches that can help them win a championship and coach any event they need to coach.
