Farah has admitted that Rupp is faster than him in the sprints/track workouts. Salizar is developing a monster with Rupp - years in the making, ready to peak at London in the 10k. I would not be surprised if he PR'd in the 5k on the way on the 10k final.
Marathon training makes perfect sense for Rupp, who needs to develop his aerobic base even further so he can shift into the high gears at the end of a championship race, instead of getting dropped in the last lap or two like he did in both the 5k and 10k at the World Championships this year. He clearly has the speed, running 1:51 for the final 800m of his 10k at the US Championships. He just needs to be able to do that off of a competitive pace, instead of the "tempo run" pace.

Yeah, we definitely need someone with great foot speed. I just can't see it coming from someone with great leg speed. And nose speed just won't cut it. On the other hand great armpit speed might just get you there.
Speed is speed. MORON.
Foot speed means turnover, or less contact on ground time. A guy who has that kind of foot speed to run a low 26 10k willbe the one to break 2.
Now who is the moron?

What are these guys smoking?? He's run a single race at 1/2 marathon distance or above in his entire life, and he is going to step into probably the toughest marathon race in championship history to medal in, with 3 insanely good Kenyans, 3 insanely good Ethiopians, and several others, and bring home a medal. What??! Did these guys happen to notice that 2:04 is the new 2:08 ?? Hey, if Galen is ready to run 2:03:45 come 2012, I TOO think he will be a medal contender. Problem is, he likely will only be able to run 2:06 at best. But what's 2+ minutes.
And furthermore, he IS without a doubt a bronze contender in the 10k.[/quote]

This.
It's just a matter of numbers that it's going to take something quite special to medal in the 2012 Olympics Marathon. More than half of the Ethiopia/Kenya plus a few others are going to have an off day in London? I think not. Hell, Kenya and Ethiopia could make a B-squad with their leftovers that would chew up the USA's cream of the crop right now. Galen or no Galen, the US does not podium in the marathon at London. Like Lance, I'm excited about the idea of Rupp potentially medaling in the 10k. Hold on Rupp, your time to cash in on 26.2 is coming. Think how high his stock (debut marathon appearance fee) would rise with an olympic medal around his neck...
I don't think many people would have picked Baldini for the gold in 2004. Crazy things happen in the marathon.
... or Meb to get silver.

Yes, but things have changed a lot in the last two or three years. It's very hard to not see the Olympic marathon going out the way Sir L. described it.

Crazy things can still happen in the marathon. I'm not saying that it won't go down that way, just that that isn't necessarily what is going to happen. Seriously, who would have picked Baldini and Meb over Paul Tergat, who has a better marathon PR than Samuel Wanjiru and is still the Kenyan national record holder at 10000? How about Meb in New York in 2009?

Ummm...You.
Was that a trick question?
So let me see, one guy runs a low 26 10k with faster turnover while another runs a low 26 10k with slower turnover. So one has the advantage over the other?
MORON.
"In non-championship racing, Meb's NYCM win is a major exception. That race was an outlier, for its slowness and that a non-African won"
Pssst...Meb's African.

Stuck with match.com, I guess you still haven't found a date yet. That must be frustrating.
I have no idea whether Galen will run. But if he does, the question will become which one of Meb and Ritz fails to make the team.
2016 still relevent today
