Interesting to say the least.
This means Rupp did pay the $50 to enter.
Don't see why he'd enter to just pace Ritz or just to screw with the minds of others.

No, it means Nike paid $50 for him to enter.
15 mile tempo run pacing Ritz (and giving Ritz a better shot because others could not hang back not knowing if Rupp was in it to win or not)?
I called it months ago--Rupp for the Zatopek triple in London '12.
I believe a blond haired male has never won the Olympic Marathon (they just can't take the heat). If it's cool in London that could change with Rupp.
Does the schedule at the Olympics work to double in the marathon and the 10k or 5k?
Rupp has a realistic shot at a medal in the 10k and maybe the 5k. The marathon would be a complete long shot.
A few thoughts:
1) I bet he is pacing Dathan. If things are going exceptionally well, he might finish, but I'd peg it at less than 10%. He COULD be doing the fake-out, but why bother? Solinsky and Teg (and Bairu of course) aren't in the race. Do they really hate the minor Schumacher group guys that much?
2) Rupp could PROBABLY place in the top 3, but DEFINITELY could not win. Unless something is horribly wrong with Hall's training, nobody is beating him.
3) Has Rupp ran enough mileage to run the marathon? I seem to recall Salazar saying Rupp is only at 95 or 105. Hall is hitting more than that with an off day, and I'm sure he's been close to 140 or 150 before. Has Rupp done the long tempo work required? Salazar is absurdly secretive with his workouts, but I figured they'd be doing more intervals and medium/short tempos to prepare for the trials.
4) A LOT can happen in a marathon. No way Salazar is risking this as Galen Rupp's true marathon debut. As the front page says, Rupp could make $250,000 debuting at NYC and if he biffs the OTM he will not get nearly that much. Why risk it?
He is running the marathon as insurance in case he doesn't make the 5k or 10k teams for some reason (illness, injury, getting outkicked...).
He can easily win this race.
I just read the home page section and didn't realize he had signed up a while back. How did I miss that? Anyway, I might need to change my predictions if Rupp decides to race @ the trials. Things that make you go hmmm...
is the course Rupp certified?

The answer to that is always: have Hayward, Osaka, Beijing, Berlin, Doha, Daegu, and Brussels been Rupp-certified? Yes? OK then.
How 'bout this....Rupp has zero chance of ever winning an OLY medal (let alone gold) at 5K or 10K. Why not give it a try who knows maybe he'll be a natural, and can win some $ sooner rather than later? I think he will be a good 26er.

Stefano Baldini, Athens 2004, in one of the hottest Olympic Marathons.

No apparently not Hayward
The question I'd liked answered is how much of the specific marathon training has Rupp been doing. Just before the NYRR 5,000, Ritz talked about running 20 miles, and having Rupp run 10 with him and Farah the other 10. The trials are exactly four weeks off, which means for Ritz and others only one to two weeks of hard marathon training left. Deciding to run a marathon is not like a 1,500 meter guy deciding to run a 5,000 or even a 10,000. So, has he been doing the training with Ritz the last four or five weeks? Has he been practicing taking fluids?
Is there a precedent of people being pacers at the Marathon trials? Because I think that would be really sad if he did that. Also, if he qualified for the Zatopek triple.. that would be so cool..
One other questions: What does Ritz think about this move?
Our American record holder, Rupp, can definitely medal in both the 5 and 10. The fact he gets outkicked the last 400 meters in all championship races is purely psychological. Rupp will not run this marathon let alone be at the trails.

Don't forget Waldemar "the Needle" Cierpinski. I think he qualifies as blond.

How many USA titles has Rupp won at Hayward? And Solinsky?
Good question. I think this would be great to see. This could be like Gebre Gebremarian coming into NY in 2010.
I think this will force a faster pace. If they jog 20 miles and then race, Rupp will tough to beat. This may make it tough for everyone but Hall.
